Some choices are easier than others...
...some decisions easier to make; don't eat that, go in there, don't stick that in there.
But life is full of the tougher decisions as well.
Take this role that we have to manage the engineering function of a leading manufacturer of FMCG packaging solutions. The decision to take the role is the easy part. The company itself is forward thinking and thrives on innovation; they are peerless in their field. You are encouraged to develop ideas into bespoke Capital Equipment for clients worldwide and given the freedom to put your stamp on strategic plans and the operational day to day.
This day to day will involve the management and control of all engineering design activities for production projects. You'll become the company?s technical authority and ensure that the company continues to maintain it?s pre-eminent role and technical leadership in the global market place.
You will be chosen for your engineering skills, that much is a given. This is very much a role for a leader who still enjoys solving problems and the engineering nitty-gritty - Mechanical and Electric / Electronic Design as opposed to civil is what we are after, the type of individual that sees schematics, steel and circuit boards as possibilities not trials. But, being demanding in the way that true innovators are, we want more from you...
...and perhaps this is where that easy decision we were speaking about - the great package and relaxed working environment; the benefits and autonomy - becomes muddied into the real depth of the role.
You see, we are also definitely after a 'Really Good Engineer' as opposed to just a 'Really Good Engineering Manager'.
A 'Really Good Engineer' doesn't just fix things or keep things running, a good engineer creates things, finds solutions and clarity among the noise.
A 'Really Good Engineer' inspires his team by working with them at the coal face, not tucked away in an office or boardroom. You will be leading a team building Capital Equipment, some of these will be made to order and created to cater to specific client requirements, and specific requirements require specific solutions.
A 'Really Good Engineer' knows that it's not about what is easy but about what works.
Solving puzzles. creating solutions, inspiring teams... Proper Engineering!
You'll be an Engineer responsible for every department in the production of state of the art packaging machinery for the Food & Beverage industry as well as every person within those teams.
Yes, you'll need to have experience managing entire engineering departments, from R&D through Design to Troubleshooting and sign-off, but you'll also need to demonstrate that your mindset is still all about the engineering...
...because that's what makes a 'Really Good Engineering Manager'.
If it still sounds like an easy decision to apply, then it'd be great to hear from you.
