Unix Systems Engineer - Investment Banking - £450/day - 11 month contract

Our client is a leading investment bank based in the city that are looking for a Unix Systems Engineer to join them on an 11 month contract paying around £450/day.

They currently have a mix of Windows and Unix operating systems, and the role will center around providing 2nd and 3rd line support for server and systems infrastructure. The role will also involve building both Windows and Linux/Unix systems that comply with both project timescales and system requirements.

Responsibilities are as follows:
* Follow the sun BAU Support - servers,
* Backups/Restores
* Monitoring of systems
* Capacity planning and management
* Providing technical guidance to projects as required
* Attending global technology based meetings
* Providing recommendations for service improvement
* Providing recommendations for technology improvement
* Working with the Architecture team to implement new technologies or improvements
* Work on projects that require the implementation of systems that run on this platform.

The key skills required are as follows:

* Good knowledge of UNIX (Linux, Solaris) System administration;
* Extensive operational experience with Unix system (Linux, Solaris);
* Good knowledge of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP protocols and applications implementing them;
* Knowledge of virtualization technologies and blade systems;
* Ability to work with hardware parts (servers components, SAN/NAS storage systems, fibre channel switches);
* Good knowledge of load balancing system, both Open-Source and Commercial solutions;
* Operational experience with security issues and access control mechanisms (Iptables, pf packet filtering) and sniffing packets for troubleshooting purposes (tcpdump, snoop, tshark and wireshark);
* Very Good Knowledge of Active Directory, supporting from a Multi-Domain environments.
* Very Good Knowledge of Group Policy and troubleshooting GPO issues
* Very Good knowledge of HP Proliant Servers and Blades,
* Very Good experience of DNS/DHCP/IP
* Very Good experience of installing and supporting Red Hat Linux in an Enterprise environment
* Good experience with implementing and managing monitoring solutions
* Experience of backup technologies in particular Symantec Backup Exec/Netbackup
* Good Troubleshooting skills
* Support of servers at Remote Data Centres
* Good understanding of Solaris and SUN Servers

* Windows or Red Hat Certification
* Any Linux to AD integration experience (SSO)
* Understanding of Change management processes
* Ability to use scripting technologies windows/unix
* Experience supporting Apache/TomCat
* Understanding of Database technologies
* High ethical standards
* Take ownership of projects and tasks
* Good time management
* Strong interpersonal skills
* Effective communicator
