The Debenhams Business Placement Programme is designed for current 2 nd year university students wanting an industrial placement or "sandwich" year as part of their degree course.

Starting in July 2018 and running for a period of 52 weeks, this exciting programme in Merchandising offers you the opportunity to kick start your career and expand your existing experience.

At the end of this placement you will return to university with a real insight into the how a Retail Support Centre office operates and the different careers within.

From day one you'll enjoy real responsibility working as part of a Merchandising team. You will gain exposure to all stages of the Merchandising process whilst working closely alongside the Buying and Distribution Teams, as well as stores.

What does a Merchandiser do ?

Put simply, a Merchandiser is responsible for making sure that products are in the right stores at the right time and in the correct quantities. This involves working very closely with Buying teams to accurately forecast trends, plan stock levels and continually monitor performance. The Buyer selects the lines and the Merchandiser will decide how much money should be spent and how many lines to buy. The Merchandiser also decides the quantities of the lines bought.

Merchandisers set prices in order to maximise profits and manage the performance of ranges. They plan promotions and also markdown products where necessary.

What you will be doing….

Working as a Trainee Assistant Merchandiser your attention to detail and accuracy will be key when supporting the Merchandising team with product analysis. You will be helping to analyse best sellers taking into account price points, colours and styles.

You will be monitoring slow selling products and helping to take action to lower price points or planning promotions. Your focus will be to maximise profits and limit markdown spend. You will also be aiding the Merchandiser with sales and range planning and be communicating with suppliers in line with the critical path set down by the team.

During your time you'll develop your communication, negotiation and analytical skills by working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. At the end of the placement you will return to university with a real insight into how a Merchandising team operates and the different careers paths that are possible.

What you will bring….

We're looking for students who are currently studying a degree in Retail Management, Business Studies, Finance or a related subject and are looking to combine their degree with a genuine interest in Retail.

You'll be an analytical person, with a passion for fashion, who is commercially aware and has a sound understanding of the business environment. You must have a hard working and flexible approach.

The ability to communicate effectively is also essential, as you'll be dealing with a variety of people at different levels across the business. In addition, you must be numerate and possess strong organisational and computer skills.

What you will get in return…
  • Up to 25% discount in stores and online
  • Access to external discounts and promotions through Perks@Debenhams
  • 31 days holiday (inclusive of bank holidays)
  • Interest Free Season Ticket Loan
  • Access to In-house Sample Sales
  • Early Finish Fridays on Pay Day
  • Subsidised Restaurant
