Desktop Engineer / 2nd Line Support - Calling all IT and system wizards! Spider. The regions Fixed Fee Web Recruiters are excited to be supporting a Suffolk University based in Ipswich, with their search for a Desktop Engineer / 2nd Line Support.

IT Services are responsible for all technical services delivered to staff and students within the University, excepting the student information and VLE systems.

As the Desktop Engineer you will be responsible for overseeing the design, integration and delivery of functional, well supported desktop systems.

Other key duties include:

  • Delivery very of desktop computer software and operating systems via Microsoft SCCM.
  • Performance monitoring and reporting.
  • Documentation of all desktop, laptop and mobile systems configurations.
  • Provision of second line technical support, with occasional first line cover for the Service Desk team.
  • Manage escalated support tickets, from the Service Desk Team.
  • Procurement of desktop hardware, software and peripherals
  • Investigate and escalate Service Desk tickets, as and when required.

This role would suit a technician with a solid background in technical support, who is looking to develop their technical skills with a focus on desktop management and delivery of software across the campus.

Essential skills and attributes required:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience of troubleshooting hardware issues including replacement of desktop and mobile hardware.
  • Experience installing software patches and updates on desktops, laptops and mobile devices, via management services, via Microsoft WSUS and SCCM.
  • Desktop operating systems (Microsoft Windows).
  • Directory services (Active Directory).
  • Desktop deployment and management, via Microsoft SCCM and other tools. Desktop performance monitoring and capacity planning.
  • ITIL: knowledge of incident and problem management techniques.
  • 2 years' experience in a technical role.
  • Relevant industry IT qualifications.
  • The willingness to undergo further self-paced and directed training.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experience of Apple Macintosh hardware and software.
  • Server operating systems.
  • Formal vendor certifications.
  • Helpdesk systems administration and configuration.
  • Administration of service level agreements.
  • Shell scripting (Mac and PC hardware platforms).
  • The willingness to undergo further self-paced and directed training.
