£33,569 per annum for 36 hours per week Monday to Friday based at Merrow Complex, Merrow Lane, Merrow, Guildford, Surrey GU4 7BQ.

About the Role

Surrey County Council is the Highway Authority for the County of Surrey and is responsible for the maintenance of 3000 miles of our road network and 4 square miles of footway.

Surrey County Council spends a significant proportion of the £20m Highways and Transport capital budget on maintaining and improving the roads and footways on our highway. We are constantly looking at opportunities to increase our available funds through making bids to Local Economic Partnerships and the Department for Transport which can boost our investment by millions of pounds per year.

To help manage this key area of work, we are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and forward thinking Engineer to join our Highway Engineering Team, responsible for delivering our capital carriageway and footway planned maintenance programmes. The team consists of a manager, 3 team leaders, 1 senior engineer, 6 engineers, 2 technicians and a programme support team. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide variety of schemes from the point of commissioning through to completion including feasibility, developing designs, costing, procurement, ordering, site inspections, and finance.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced self-motivated Engineer to make an important contribution to improve service delivery, be innovative and find new ways of working together with the Term Maintenance Contractor and supply chain.

The team are co-located with the County Term Maintenance contractor at our Merrow highways depot near Guildford. The role will include a mix of office and site work and a driving licence and car are essential.

The ideal candidate will be someone who is a good team player, with Local Government experience and excellent communication and negotiation skills, to work closely with a range of stakeholders. This would include Elected Members, MPs, residents, colleagues, design consultants, external authorities, contractors, Districts and Borough Councils, landowners and utilities on a day-to-day basis to effectively deliver the annual programme of works whilst providing Best Value.

To be shortlisted for interview your CV and personal statement* will clearly evidence:

  • Technical knowledge of civil engineering construction materials and methods
  • In depth understanding of highway engineering solutions
  • Sound experience of delivering engineering schemes to time and budget
  • Good project management skills with examples of previous schemes
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements on engineering sites
  • Stakeholder management
