Job Description:To manage broad range of varied case work activities complying with policies, standards, procedures and service level agreements.Deal with complex and non routine cases exercising appropriate levels of delegation and risk management.Maintain accurate and comprehensible case files. Co-ordinate all activities relating to the successful completion of the case including.Ensure the timely handling of invoices during each case.Comply with Litigation Group’s Quality policies.Provide a legal service that addresses client needs from outset of each case through to case completion.Provide a legal service that is proactive not reactive.Manage all aspects of the client relationship for each allocated case. Align the service provided with the client needs in a way that enhances the Agency’s reputation.Build and maintain relationships with clients demonstrating an understanding of commercial, political and policy context including effective use of the relevant client care system.Ensure each client is aware of the agreed extent of the service to be provided and cost implications.Keep each client informed as the case progresses
We have an opportunity for an advisory lawyer in HMRC, Solicitor’s Office and Legal Services (SOLS). SOLS is an integral part of HMRC. It is headed by the General Counsel and Solicitor, Gill Aitken, and includes approximately 150 lawyers who advise on legal issues arising from HMRC’s policy and operational work and conduct the Department’s litigation. Our legal work is high quality and covers a broad range of subjects. In addition to tax, our advice covers a range of general public law issues for HMRC, including human rights, administrative law, European law, freedom of information and commercial law. Our lawyers work in specialist teams handling specific areas of work. Each team tends to focus on either advisory work or litigation. There is one position for a lawyer to carry out advisory work in one of our business tax advisory teams. The team advises on stamp taxes (including stamp duty land tax), capital allowances and trading profits and income. Our team’s work falls into two categories: legislative and advisory work. On the legislative side, we advise on the development of policy, we work on Finance Bill legislation, and we draft statutory instruments. Our advisory work includes advising on operational and technical tax matters. All our work requires consideration of compatibility with the Human Rights Act and EU law.
Key Tasks & Deliverables:The successful applicant will focus on the advisory work: providing legal advice on operational or technical matters. This will involve detailed analysis of tax legislation and guidance in difficult and borderline cases. The applicant may also be asked to advise on the effectiveness of avoidance schemes. We are looking for an intellectually capable, highly motivated lawyer with powerful oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal skills. You will be working as part of a team of lawyers based in London.
Experience Required:You will need good legal professional skills, including the following essential requirements: • reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk • sound analysis of issues, using secure legal research • making evidence based decisions • managing a quality service for clients Legal professional experience of one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: • Company Law, • Tax (knowledge of corporate and/or property tax would be an advantage) (whether in this or another comparable jurisdiction), and / or • Public law. You need to have good self-awareness and a commitment to using feedback to learn and develop as a professional. You will need good IT skills (word/excel/outlook).

Please Note: The lower pay rate advertised in this job description is the PAYE daily pay rate. The higher pay rate advertised in this job description is the highest Umbrella Company daily pay rate that the client is willing to pay up to.
