Head Teacher, Polkemmet Primary School, 35 hours per week, closing date 22nd October 2017

Polkemmet Primary School is a non - denominational school serving an area in the community of Whitburn. The school has strong links with Whitburn Academy and its associated primary schools, together with effective collaborative partnerships with schools in the local community. The school is situated in area of significant multiple deprivation with a free meal entitlement of 40% in P4 - P7.

The current roll this session is 182 with a 9 class organisation, including Nursery, which is 20/20. The school is staffed by a head teacher, a principal teacher, 9 class teachers, 2 part -time support for learning teachers, Nursery teacher, Nursery Nurse. The school also benefits from Music, Art and Science specialists. An admin assistant, clerical assistant and 4 pupil support workers complete the staff team. The team of Pupil Support Workers assist pupils across the school.

Pupils, parents/ carers, staff, parish members, chaplaincy team and the wider community identify strongly with the school. The school understands and plays a significant role in the local community. The welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the school reflects the commitment to ensuring a climate of mutual respect and trust based on shared values and positive, supportive relationships. Learners across the school support and encourage each other well. Staff know the children and their families well.

Effective self-evaluation leading to improvement is central to the life and work of the school. The staff team regularly discuss national best practice and recent educational developments to achieve consistent whole school approaches. Recent improvement work has focused on raising attainment, particularly in Literacy and Numeracy. There is ongoing work, strengthening parental engagement through the newly appointed Parent Council.
