Role: IT Performance & Monitoring Engineer (DevOps Engineer) Location: Central London Salary: £40,000 A leading financial services organisation is looking for a Junior DevOps Engineer to help develop and support bespoke solutions for operational and performance monitoring across the company's key IT systems - principally an award-winning trading platform. This role will revolve around acquiring machine data from across the infrastructure, collecting it into a big data platform, building the data processing and analytics on that data and turning the data into actionable and easy to read intelligence via visual dashboards. This is a highly technical role, so a strong academic background from within Computer Science, Maths or Engineering -related subjects is favourable. some experience in low-level application configuration in Linux is required - you need to be competent on the Linux command line and have demonstrated an ability to make error-free configuration changes. This could include experience gained in your own time configuring Linux (e.g. Raspberry Pi project), and does not necessarily need to be in a professional environment. Some scripting/coding experience is also required - could have been gained at university or in spare time. Work experience in an operational support role as well as the knowledge of real-time systems and monitoring and alerting solutions is highly desirable. Purpose of the role: - Build and maintain bespoke operational monitoring/alerting on our trading system and business services - Administer the acquisition and retention of machine data into Splunk - Detect and investigate performance, capacity and resilience issues with our trading system and infrastructure - Acquire & provide low-level technical expertise on core technologies Responsibilities: - Administration of clustered on-premises Splunk installation (including. upgrades, architecture, restores, index config, retention, acquisition) - Configuration and administration of other 3rd party monitoring tools as required (incl. Splunk and AppDynamics RUM) - Develop monitoring solutions for performance and uptime, including custom dashboards. - Maintain effective and collaborative relationships with production supports staff and infrastructure teams Must have's: - Strong Linux skills incl. shell scripting and configuration - Some experience administrating 3rd party software - 1st Class or 2.1 Degree in Computer Science, Maths or Engineering. - High attainment in Maths (e.g. A/B in A-level Maths or equivalent) - Good at abstract problem solving - Ability to learn new technology and programming languages quickly - Attention to detail - Ability to absorb and apply low-level information on technologies and frameworks - Independent self-starter who shows initiative - Strong work ethic Desirables: - Experience in operational support of critical real-time systems - Splunk administration and dashboard development - Coding in Python, Bash, XML and Java (at University if not professionally) - Worked on Windows and Linux environments - An active interest in technology at a very detailed level - Having experimented with technology outside of university course - e.g. built websites, apps etc. This role is ideal for recent graduates or those who graduated in the last couple of years and are looking for a more challenging role than their current one.
