Cloud Operations Engineer - SolarisThis position sits the side of the group that deals with public sector clients so the ability to gain SC clearance is a must. This is a very interesting position mainly working on the migration of an Oracle Sparc environment to a Cloud/Solaris platform.
  • Execute the defined incident, problem management and request fulfilment processes, in-line with ITIL best practices
  • Maintain platform security and compliance requirements aligned to IL2/OFFICIAL, PCI-DSS, ISO27001 accreditation.
  • Create and maintain architecture and life-cycle plans for systems and infrastructure.
  • Coordinate internally and with customers to design, implement and integrate appropriate architecture.
  • Diagnose and resolve where possible incidents and requests escalated from 1st and 2nd line engineers to ensure services are delivered to the SLA.
  • Ensure that customer’s expectations are met and surpassed where possible; communicate clearly with all stakeholders.
  • Ensure the optimum performance, scalability and usability of systems and hosted services by developing strong and viable architectural standards.
  • Create and maintain operations manuals and management processes to enable junior engineers to carry out repeatable tasks.
  • Plan and design monitoring and management systems, taking actions to ensure system availability, security and integrity.
  • Contribute to development and reporting of key performance indicators.
  • Remain current on latest technologies, particularly relating to development and enhancement of the Oracle infrastructure; and identify, evaluate and incorporate enhancements and extensions to architecture and life-cycle plans.
  • Contribute to the strengthening of the technical team by sharing knowledge and information.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies, plans and feasibility studies.
  • Out-of-hours and on-call work. Participate in the 24/7/365 technical support on-call rotation.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Position specific skills set:

  • Solaris UNIX and Linux troubleshooting and management skills
  • Oracle Sparc Technology (Sun4u, Sun4v servers from M3000 to M12, T2000 – T7-4)
  • Cloud Infrastructure Computing (VMWare Vcloud, vSphere, OEM)
  • Oracle RAC, ASM
  • Good networking skills

Preferable candidate education, experience and knowledge:

  • University degree or at least five years of professional experience.
  • Linux/Unix Qualification or training: RHCE, OCP, OCE
  • Network Qualification or training: CCNA, JCNA

Skills & Experience:

The ideal candidate will possess as wide a range as possible of the following skills, qualifications and experience.


  • University degree or at least five years of professional experience.
  • Desirable: RHCE, OCP, CCNA


  • 3-5+ years maintaining Solaris and Oracle Enterprise Linux OSs such as OEL, Solaris, RHEL
  • Strong experience of physical and virtual (Container/Zone) Solaris OS
  • Experience of backup products such as Veritas NetBackup, Veeam Backup and Replication.
  • Networking: TCP/IP, firewall, switching, etc. CCNA preferable
  • Antivirus software: Kaspersky, ClamAV
  • Monitoring platforms: Nagios, Icinga, Prometheus
  • Configuration management and orchestration using Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Salt etc


  • Good troubleshooting knowledge
  • Good understanding of Oracle Solaris versions 8 -11
  • Basic VMware management. i.e. Create and edit virtual machines, networks, storage, etc.;
  • A good knowledge of networking and storage technologies.
  • Awareness of ITIL practices and processes


  • HP and Oracle Sparc Technology hardware skills, including ILO/ILOM and RAID configurations.
  • Advanced level of developing/debugging shell scripts (bash, csh, ksh, perl, ruby)
  • An understanding of storage connectivity technologies (SAN, iSCSI, FCoE)
  • An understanding of Networking services (LDAP, NIS,NIS+, DNS, TCPIP)
  • An understanding of Volume management products such as Solaris Volume Manager and ZFS
  • Experience with large scale system management and monitoring tools (e.g. Oracle Enterprise Manager, Kibana, Logstash, Real User Experience Insight (RUEI))
  • Interest in furthering professional studies to keep current with changing technologies.
