Manchester and Warrington Quakers own five meeting houses – in Central Manchester, Eccles, Sale, South Manchester and Warrington. These buildings are primarily places of worship for local Quakers, but on weekdays and Saturdays they are also meeting places for all kinds of groups. Central Manchester is a large building, right at the heart of the city centre, and operates as a conference venue for a variety of commercial, third sector, and community organisations. The Business Manager is based at the Central Manchester site.

Our conferencing business is now well established and we have a great team in place. Customer feedback is routinely positive. In addition, our staff have a good working relationship with local members, and understand the need to balance revenue growth with the values of the wider organisation. We are looking for a Business Manager who is able to lead the conferencing team and ensure a continued focus on excellence while maintaining good communication with local members. Experience in line managing staff is essential, as is a willingness to join the team in undertaking customer service roles when required.

Our company, Quaker Trading (Manchester & Warrington) Limited, is a wholly owned subsidiary of our charity, Manchester and Warrington Area Quaker Meeting. All our company directors are Quakers and they report to the Trustees of the charity, who are also Quakers. Trustees report to the membership and ensure that work is done in accordance with Quaker principles and the relevant law. The Area Meeting as a whole discerns the overall direction of our work.

The Clerk of the Trustees line manages the Executive Officer, who leads the staff team. The senior management team is made up of the Executive Officer, the Business Manager, the Finance Manager and the Operations Manager.

The Trustees are in the very early stages of considering whether and how to redevelop the large basement space at Central Manchester. There are numerous possibilities for this project and it is an exciting time to be joining us. As a member of the senior management team, the Business Manager will be fully involved in the discussions and in the project itself. The whole team will work collaboratively to develop the vision and values of the business.

Overall, this role offers an opportunity to use your commercial acumen for the benefit of a charitable organisation. You will run an excellent conference business, maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction while attracting new clients and developing new packages. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that your work directly benefits Quaker work in Greater Manchester.

The work is very varied and Central Manchester meeting house is an enjoyable place to work. As a team we are flexible and understanding of one another and always try our best to accommodate each other’s needs.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated professional, with management experience in hospitality and customer care, and a proven track record leading a team. You will have excellent communication and people skills.
