Job Title: Frontend Developer Location: Oxfordshire Start date: Immediately Wage: £30,000 - £38,000 (depending on experience) Fixed duration: Permanent Hours: Full-time Role Overview We seek an experienced and self-starting JavaScript programmer to collaborate with our growing informatics team on building responsive browser-based user interfaces for both internal and customer-facing web services, and to further develop our existing suite of scientific data visualisation tools. The appointee will work closely with our full-time UX designer to build web apps that consume our already-mature resource management REST APIs. These web apps will target scientists working in the field of molecular biology. The appointee will work initially on two main projects: an internal laboratory information management system (LIMS); and an innovative suite of customer-facing tools that simplify the design and manipulation of synthetic DNA constructs. The Applicant Sought: The successful applicant will have expert knowledge of and several years’ experience working with JavaScript (at least ECMAScript 2015) in production environments. Demonstrable familiarity with modern JavaScript build tooling (the Node.js ecosystem, minification, transpilation, polyfilling, and the rest) is essential. The successful applicant will be an advocate of best practices for version control (we use git), unit testing, and cross-browser compatibility. Preference will be given to applicants with a good working knowledge of one or more high-level MVC-type frameworks (e.g. Angular 2, ReactJS, Meteor, Vue.js, or similar.) Applicants who have not worked with Angular 2 before should demonstrate their willingness to come up to speed quickly. Experience with data presentation and graphics rendering libraries (e.g. especially D3, but also Raphaël, Sigma, or similar) is highly desireable. Some familiarity with SVG and the HTML5 canvas API would be advantageous. The successful applicant will have advanced knowledge of CSS 3 (selectors, WebKit animations, and similar), and some experience using modern CSS preprocessors (especially LESS or Sass.) Preference will be given to candidates with a genuine interest in keeping up to date with modern web technologies and standards. Tell us about a new technology you’ve discovered and why you’re excited to try it out – if it fits with our vision, we’ll support you to give it a go. Good written and verbal communcation skills are essential; the successful applicant will spend a significant portion of their time developing their implementation ideas in direct conversation with our scientists and our business development team. Knowledge of biological sciences is not required. Nevertheless, an interest in and willingness to learn about the basics of genetic engineering would be looked on favourably. The Benefits Offered: Work alongside scientists and engineers in an energetic, stimulating and interdisciplinary environment to help build a Sonovate 2016 Top 50 Fastest Growing company at the forefront of the biotechnology revolution. Great opportunities for career progression and personal development. Let us invest in you with generous allowances for training courses, conferences and technical meetups. Assume responsibility for and ownership of your projects from day one. Know that your work will have a clear and visible impact on our day-to-day operations. Twenty-five days’ plus bank holidays’ annual leave, frequent company away days, flexible working hours, a relaxed and casual office culture, and an employer-matched pension scheme. The position offered is full-time, to start immediately, working from our offices in Oxfordshire. The appointee will work closely with and report to our Head of Bioinformatics. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK without sponsorship We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified persons regardless of their race, sex, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation or age.
