System Technician – East
Home/Field Based (covering the East, from Hunstanton to Lymington, including the Thames and the Isle of Wight)
£25,407 - £29,891 DOE

Our client is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Their lifeboat crews and lifeguards need a dedicated, professional and talented team behind them so whatever the weather, their lifeboats and lifeguard assets need to operate to the highest technical standards.

As a System Technician within the East Division, covering the maintenance and repair of assets from Hunstanton around the South East Coast to Lymington, including the Thames and Isle of Wight, you will be expected to work closely with Station Mechanics, volunteers and lifeguards to carry out planned maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair on various pieces of equipment which could be anything from a Lifeguard Quad Bike to a brand new state-of-the-art Shannon Class Lifeboat.

Part of your duties as a System Technician will include trialling existing, repaired or new equipment, so you will need to possess and demonstrate an excellent mechanical and electrical/electronic knowledge. You should have a desire to stay current in the use of existing technology and be willing to learn and get involved in the roll-out of new equipment and technology which is constantly changing within our client’s Search and Rescue equipment.

To be considered, you will need:

- A time-served apprenticeship or experience in mechanical, electrical and/or electronic engineering
- An NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in a mechanical, electronic or electrical discipline
- A full, valid driving licence

At least one of the following is also essential:

- Broad knowledge of diesel and petrol engines and/or electrical systems
- Marine or plant experience
- Experience of construction and/or the modification of electronic equipment
- Experience of repairing and maintaining electronic equipment

As a System Technician, you will need to be a proactive individual who can respond quickly to changing priorities and tight deadlines. You’ll also be self-motivated, willing to go that extra mile and able to work well, both as part of a team and on your own initiative.

Ideally, you’ll have a towing licence, but this is not essential as training can be given.

The role requires you to be part of a duty rota and be expected, when required, to work unsociable hours. As this is a field based role, you will also be required to travel.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help them deliver a world-class lifesaving service. They are an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, they also look for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping work towards their goal of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
