Operations Engineer

The Team:

Our Real-Time Data team is the part of our Technology team that delivers financial market data for millions of instruments traded in markets worldwide, representing a full range of asset classes. We supply this data both internally to Morningstar products and externally to clients, supporting the need for fast, reliable market information in a variety of formats and time intervals.

The Role:

As an Operations Engineer, you will work a 24/7 12 hour shift rota in a team responsible for Morningstar's central real-time data systems 24 hours a day which are based in data centres around the globe. You will be responsible for pro-actively monitoring all servers (Windows), application software (usually bespoke), databases, feeds and network connections, detecting faults/issues and fixing them. This position is based in our London office.


    Providing excellent pro-active, real-time monitoring of hardware, application software and network connections, detecting any issues and making sure they are fixed or escalated to senior management. Performing scheduled checks to ensure correct system performance. Provide excellent customer service by responding to and efficiently resolving client/service desk issues and requests, working closely with Client Helpdesk Support team. Working with Development teams to assist in testing and deployment of new software/updates. Liaising with data suppliers (such as Stock Exchanges) and network/circuit suppliers to troubleshoot issues. Diagnosing and correcting errors for example in data integrity or application configuration. Creating and updating documentation. Working with SysAdmin teams on project work such as setting up/migrating to new systems.

    Bachelor's Degree or similar in a technical discipline with strong academic credentials and/or previous experience working within the IT industry (technical certifications desirable). Ability to work in a demanding fast paced environment and learn quickly. Solid working knowledge of Windows operating system and Wintel hardware. Broad overall understanding of networking communications and technologies. Pro-active, adaptable and creative engineer able to work from their own initiative. Ability to think logically to troubleshoot issues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills which are necessary to work with colleagues and clients. Documentation and organisational skills are key. Any experience with monitoring systems, application/database support, automation/shell scripting or development would be beneficial. Any experience in the financial services industry is also a plus.
