A leader in the automotive industry and looking for a progressive and commercially astute qualified Chartered UK (and/or European) Intellectual Property Attorney with a proven IP experience background (a minimum of 4 years). You must be comfortable in liaising with clients and feel confident in advising, defending and prosecuting infringement actions and negotiating intellectual property agreements. First-hand experience of working in the automotive sector within this role is a must.

General Responsibilities

  • Keep close relationship with the engineering community to provide IP support, education, guidance and advice
  • Cooperate with the global IP team to ensure adherence to the Company's IP strategy
  • Represent the Company on the IP Federation and/or other relevant professional lobby groups

Protect and enforce IP relating to technical developments originating from business

  • Encourage and enhance invention disclosure submissions from the technical community
  • Manage invention disclosure searching, evaluation, patent drafting and prosecution process both in-house and through outside counsel
  • Prepare patent infringement advice
  • Prepare enforcement analyses

IP related transactions

  • Negotiate standard agreements related to IP, including development and government funded collaboration agreements
  • Negotiate bespoke IP terms with JVs and other partners,
  • Handle Purchasing-related IP issues
  • Handle copyright and design issues

Specific focus on new IP areas

  • Support Smart Mobility activities
  • Engage with Autonomous Vehicle team
  • Ensure proper IP protection of Electrification

Required Skills and Behaviours

  • Chartered UK Patent Attorney and/or European Patent Attorney with at least 4 years IP experience including in the automotive sector
  • Educated to degree level in engineering, electronics or physical sciences
  • Preferably Experience of team management
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Good knowledge of relevant IP databases and current IT systems
  • Ability to work largely unsupervised
  • Liaise with senior management and employees at all levels
  • Ability to develop staff management skills
  • Must hold a current passport and be willing to travel
