Senior Software Engineer

About Riverford

We’re mad about organic veg. It’s at the core of everything we do. We love to grow it, pack it into boxes and deliver it to customers’ doorsteps around the UK. This takes a lot of brilliant people, with a range of skills and knowledge.

30 years ago we created the organic veg box, since then we have defined entirely new organic and ethical markets, built restaurants, founded subscription e-commerce and grown to deliver to over 50,000 households per week. Every part of Riverford is enabled through technology and we want to express our unique offer to customers in a compelling and beautiful way. We are extraordinarily passionate about our products, the ethics we demand of ourselves in their supply and the attention to detail we take in their delivery. This all begins with our digital touchpoints and we want them to be stunning.

Our culture and values set us apart from other businesses. Riverford is a friendly, informal place to work, with a passionate, entrepreneurial spirit. We’re committed to providing a fair deal for growers, customers and staff.

What you’ll be doing

You will be at the centre of a new chapter for e-commerce here at Riverford. You will be defining the roadmap and architecture of our new website, identifying and developing new capabilities and features which will enable Riverford to deliver ever improving products and experiences to our customers. You will drive best practices and operational excellence into our growing codebase, feeding in from end to end including analysing requirements, identifying approaches, architecting, coding and deploying code to a live customer base. Championing an agile workflow, alongside fantastic colleagues, to deliver continuous improvement for stakeholders throughout the business.

You’ll be passionate about software development, the latest in software architecture, cloud and approaches to the problems of a vertically integrated business. You will be comfortable suggesting and defending approaches, care about the improving state of our software and take ownership over ensuring our systems are scalable, secure and robust. Ego is left at the door and taking time to mentor more junior teammates will be second nature. Most of all though you will want to work with like-minded and highly capable people to deliver fantastic ethical and delicious products powered by YOUR code and infrastructure.

This is a permanent role, 40 hours per week, based at our farm in Devon.

What you should know

We are less concerned about specifics than we are about cultural fit, an ambition, and capability, to learn and develop your skills. If there is something on our list which is out of your comfort zone that’s fine but expect us, to expect you, to pick it up and run with it should you join us! That said, here are our ideal skills for this role:

·ES2015+ – Our new web platform is built on JavaScript and Node

·Client-side frameworks – React, Vue, Ember and when to use them (or not)

·Functional programming – Our backend is Clojure; in immutability, we trust

·Mobile first – > 50% of our customers are on mobile devices

·Responsive – … so our sites must adapt to their device and channel

·Progressive enhancement – … and work for everyone, enrich where possible

·A/B testing – The best driver direction is data and tests help deliver it

·Latin plant names – Kidding!

·User-centred experiences – Riverford is obsessively customer focused

·Collaboration – Design + Engineering + Insight = Success

·Concept to production – You are involved at every stage

·E-commerce – Assessing business impact is fundamental to success

·Agile / Scrum / Kanban – We develop just-in-time to deliver value quickly

Skills & experience

·You’ll be very capable of solving design problems and communicating them to both technical and non-technical people.

·Have more than 5 years’ experience in commercial software development, working with teams, focused around creating high quality systems.

·A proven history of delivering architectural decisions on the projects you have worked on and will be comfortable describing the real business value behind those decisions.

·Bring in-depth JavaScript development experience up to and including ES2015+ exploiting functional and object-oriented paradigms to deliver production websites and/or applications.

·Know and care about the differences between MVC, MVVM, MVP and how and where the approaches differ, why and how best they can be leveraged and implemented.

·Care about developing secure applications. Bringing an awareness of common potential exploits, how to mitigate them.

·You understand the fundamentals of the web to such an extent that you can describe the differences between HTTP2 and SPDY and the reasons for their existence.

Up-to £50,000 depending on experience
