Leading Research Network and e-infrastructure organization requires a second line engineer to work within an established and high profile Operations Centre. The OC is responsible for the timely and efficient defect rectification of various network equipment, circuits and other services that make up the service portfolio. The role requires engineers to carry out configuration changes, supervise maintenance and co-ordinate with other support organizations as required. The GOC is responsible for informing partners and peers about planned work and faults as well as providing technical support. The role requires the engineer to undertake both simple and complex troubleshooting to rectify problems and restore service within given SLA’s.

Shift working

(0600-1415 & 1245-2100 & 0900-1730) on a rolling roster.

The majority of the work involves:

  • Reacting to system alarms resolving incidents with minimal loss of service;
  • Resolving major incidents within agreed service levels;
  • Reviewing, assessing and actioning customer support requests;
  • Monitoring network status and troubleshoot issues related with network infrastructure, hardware, applications and services; create and update trouble tickets as required by standard procedures;
  • Producing updating and completing documentation as required;
  • Liaising with and directing Tier 1 Service Desk staff;
  • Providing on-call support for out of office hours coverage (approximately 1 week in 6 and 1 weekend in 3;
  • Assisting with escalations from internal departments as required;
  • Configuring network routers, switches, transmission equipment, servers and support devices as per standard procedures or as directed by specialist operations engineers;
  • Drafting new and updated procedures as required;
  • Producing routine reports in accordance with laid down procedures and ad-hoc requirements;
  • Assisting specialist operations engineers in collating, processing and presenting records and data

    Qualifications, skills, experience and knowledge required


    ·Minimum of 1 years working in a NOC or Operations Centre role

    ·Ability to troubleshoot TCP/IP and optical transmission issues required

    ·Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and methods required

    ·Understanding of BGP/ISIS/MPLS and inter-domain routing required

    ·Understanding of network management systems i.e. NAGIOS

    ·Ability to understand and troubleshoot non-complex UNIX shell scripts

    ·Ability to understand concepts of SDN/NFV

    ·Experience with JUNOS Operating system preferred

    ·CCNP/CCSP/JNCSP level preferred

    ·Understanding of Virtualisation technology advantageous

    ·Firewalling technologies (JUNIPER) advantageous

    ·Out of Band management networks

    ·Security concepts appropriate to safeguarding carrier networks such as ACLs, DoS concepts and incident management

    ·Understanding of NTP and how to configure and troubleshoot

    ·Ability to debug and configure DNS

    ·General IT awareness including Microsoft office suite


    ·Service Provider experience would be an advantage

    ·Experience with Research and Education sector an advantage

    ·Experience in an ITIL environment an advantage

    ·Previous exposure to optical transmission networks preferred

    ·VPN configuration and management an advantage
