Principle Desktop Support Engineer, SCCM, SCOM, VDI, App-V, EUC, MDM

My client are a global technology firm who are seeking a talented Principle Desktop Support Engineer to join their team in Oxford. The Principle Desktop Support Engineer will be involved in a major Networking and End User Computing (EUC) transformation programme and shifting from on-premise infrastructure tocloud based services (AWS, Azure). The Principle Desktop Support Engineer will have a background in engineering and the ability to design and implement End User Computing technology.

The Principle Desktop Support Engineer should have the following experience:

    Significant IT experience (10+ years relevant work experience) with at least 5 years engineering of EUC technologies.Excellent technical skills and experience gained from working within complex Desktop, Mobile and Application infrastructure projects. You must be able to demonstrate skills designing and delivering large scale migrations together with the methodologies and techniques needed to manage a geographically disparate user base.Demonstrable experience in translating high level technical architectures and service design requirements into clear and coherent low-level designs.Experience in the automation of manual tasks and seeking out efficiencies by ‘shifting left’ where possible, for example the automation of Desktop provisioning and Application deployment, including end user self-service.Experience of problem management and troubleshooting techniques, performance and capacity reporting using various tools.Good understanding of security best practices, particularly in relation to anti-virus, software patching, data leakage prevention, role-based access control, encryption.Good understanding of the total cost ownership and lifecycle management of EUC assets.Experience of working in a geographically dispersed, international organization.Being an innovative and positive team player with excellent communication and service skills, confident in communicating technical issues and managing the demands of both non-IT staff and senior stakeholders.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team on given tasks to agreed deadlines.An eye for detail and ability to document designs, proposals, business cases and presentations tailored appropriately for different audiences.

The Principle Desktop Support Engineer needs the following technical skills:

A high level of competency is required across a minimum of five of the following skills:

    Experience of delivering a global Windows 10 desktop platform, including management of corporate images using MDT and SCCM.
  • Experience of designing and implementing Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) platforms and preferably cloud-based Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS).
  • Knowledge of application delivery techniques including packaging of MSI files and virtualisation tools such as App-V; including application lifecycle management from initial assessment through to retirement.Good understanding of general Microsoft technologies (Active Directory, GPO, DNS, DHCP, WINS, LDAP, Kerberos) as they relate to end user devices and applications.Experience of integrating large heterogeneous environments that include Windows and OS X file systems, desktops, laptops and mobile devices.Good knowledge of tracking assets and deploying patches or software using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) for Windows environmentsGood working knowledge of PowerShell to automate complex and repetitive operations for L1 and L2 support teams.Experience of security technologies and strategies, including the use of web and email content filtering, public key infrastructure, drive encryption, patch management and AV best practices.Working knowledge of O365, Skype for Business and OneDrive for client devices.Good experience with MDM technologies and how these are used to manage corporate and personal devices, preferably using Microsoft Intune.

The following desirable skills would be beneficial to the role:

    Knowledge of Windows Server 2012/2016 and related infrastructure.Experience of public and private cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.Good knowledge of tracking assets and deploying software using Jamf Pro for Apple Mac.Experience of BYOD strategies and deployment approaches that ensure corporate data remains secure and devices are compliant with company standards.Experience with industry standard monitoring tools such as System Center Operations Manager (SCOM).


    BSc in Computer Science, Information Technology or related technical field.


    Microsoft MSCE certification in relevant disciplines. ITIL Intermediate level
