About the Client: My client is one of the largest providers of legal services across government, working with over 180 government departments and agencies.An exciting opportunity had arisen for a lawyer, who has ideally has experience within local government or the public sector to join a public law planning litigation team. It is thought that this position would suit a PQE 3 or above Lawyer.

Job Description:The candidate will deal with a range of public law litigation including judicial reviews, injunction related work and Freedom of Information appeals for a range of departments and will have a mixed case load of cases, but will be predominantly judicial reviews. The candidate will be expected to have previous litigation experience dealing with public law. Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Produce legal prognoses advising on merits and litigation strategy
Draft summary grounds of defence and other pleadings as well as evidence
Instruct counsel and making use of other external legal resources, where appropriate
Manage a broad range of varied case work activities complying with policies, standards, procedures and service level agreements
Maintain accurate and comprehensive case files – both paper and on a IT case management system.
Complete supporting administrative tasks including recording and meeting chargeable hours targets and maintaining financial records
Provide effective client care and managing all aspects of the client relationship for each allocated case appreciating the particular commercial, political and policy context.
Assist the team’s knowledge management, training and other non-casework projects, as necessary
Make decisions about case progression
Advise and guide clerical support
Draft and send case correspondence
Experience Required:- Ideally previous experience dealing with planning litigation cases. Lawyers with combined experience of non-contentious planning work and high level public law litigation may be considered. - Previous experience within the public sector or government department and insight into the interrelationship between law and politics are desirable. - Able to work to deadlines and to prioritise own work - Able to manage a high caseload - Build and maintain good working relationshipsSuccessful management of complex, high value and high profile casesOversee the conduct of all files taking them through to settlement and or litigation when necessary.Dealing with complex planning litigation casesAble to work to deadlinesProviding legal and policy advice to clientsDrafting detailed advice on legal merits• Uses a process of analysis, planning, scheduling, prioritising, action, quality monitoring and review.
• Takes responsibility for own work with substantial degree of autonomy (with initial close supervision) but knowing when to consult and to delegate.
• Gives early warning to those affected by changing priorities, including the Reporting Officer.
• Displays an understanding of the resourcing requirements of own cases.
• Has up-to-the minute case files readily available.
• Displays an understanding of the context the client operates in.
• Displays the professional attitude that client and company expect from a member of an organisation with a high reputation.
• Adopts a style most likely to build an effective working relationship with the client.
• Responds to reasonable client requests including agreeing achievable and realistic actions, timescales etc.
• Acknowledges clients’ concerns and works to alleviate these in a way that balances client and Agency needs.
• Is alert to media interest which may have an impact on the reputation of the client and/or the Agency.
• Helps other team members to meet tight deadlines to preserve department’s reputation.
• Display Civil Service Values, help other people, focus on customer service and look proactively for solutions.
• Keeps abreast of legal developments and current thinking on related policy issues.
• Uses training and other methods to refresh and improve their skills and knowledge.

Please Note: The lower pay rate advertised in this job description is the PAYE daily pay rate. The higher pay rate advertised in this job description is the highest Umbrella Company daily pay rate that the client is willing to pay up to.
