April Six is one of the most respected and ambitious creative agencies in the technology sector, with offices in Harefield, London, San Francisco & Singapore. This role is based in the Harefield HQ, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of the Colne Valley. It is commutable from Uxbridge (Metropolitan Line), then a 10 minute bus ride, or Chiltern Trains (Denham), then a ten minute walk. Most employees drive and park on site.

Introduction to the role;

We’re recruiting for a Junior PHP Opensource Web Developer / Designer to join our Digital team, working with the Design, Motion and Copy teams, which together form the Creative Department. Working into two senior developers, and reporting ultimately to the Creative Director, you will be creating HTML emails, landing pages, animated ad banners and promotional microsites designed primarily for user engagement. A strong foundation in computer science or web design will be beneficial, but most of the day-to-day will be learned on the job. Experience working with Photoshop to create page designs, layouts and assets should manifest itself in a portfolio of creative work (commercial & speculative) that you are confident to talk through at interview stage. Key responsibilities include;

  • Communicating technical aspects to non-technical people
  • Coordinate with other team members including designers and copywriters
  • Ensure that digital work is consistent and adheres to brand guidelines
  • Test websites and emails
  • Fix bugs on websites and emails
  • Apply patches and updates to sites built with CMS
  • Make changes to digital projects (not just your own) after feedback on the digital implementation, design, and copy

Core skill set and attributes:

  • Good knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
  • Can write HTML and CSS without assistance
  • Passion for web design trends, user experience and interaction design (UI/UX)

  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to multi-task and keep track of multiple work streams at the same time
  • Basic web development skills and ability to perform maintenance on live websites
  • Can code in PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, jQuery with and without the support of frameworks and CMSs
  • Can create animations using jQuery and/or CSS keyframes/transitions
  • Understanding of responsive HTML+CSS
  • Understanding of web technology and how it can serve clients' needs
  • Confidence using web-based applications
  • Understanding of SEO fundamentals

Desired experience:

  • Using and configuring Wordpress CMS
  • Building HTML emails for compatibility with old software
  • Using template systems for web sites
  • Extending Wordpress CMS with bespoke themes and/or plugins
  • Using version control systems such as GIT, Mercurial, SVN or CVS
  • Applying Google Analytics and creating reports
  • Using design frameworks such as Bootstrap or FontAwesome


Salary: Up to £24k with 25 days holiday per year. There will be a four-month probation period. Following successful completion of this period, health care (currently BUPA) will be added to the package.
