The Role - Junior Full Stack Developer (Ruby on Rails) Location - London (Spitalfields) Package - £45,000 with pension, healthcare, PC/Mac / Whatever kit you want etc. Overview: There are a million and one junior full stack, Ruby on Rails development jobs around Shoreditch way and many of them will say the same thing to tempt you on board. So why should this be the one that attracts you? I'll state the normal background and yes, this is a young tech start up that has been in business for a few years and has a multi-million pound VC backed structure. They are London based with an international presence so offer both the existing, intelligent software product that is doing really well, plus a few clear additional expansions to the product that could really push them forwards on a global basis. Above and beyond that though, it's the sector what they are in and what value it can bring. They are not a charity and they make money, that's the first point but once we looked into what their goal is, this is what sets them aside from a good chunk of the other SaaS / Software Businesses in the area. It's an intelligent software platform that gives under privileged kids a fighting chance of being on level pegging with the other children that are more fortunate than them. The software is only in primary schools, and they have about 5,000 1-2-1 sessions per week with the child and a tutor. It's mainly funded by the government and is simple to use and offers proven results. This is totally interactive with a large amount of AI, and verbal communication is constant between tutor and pupil and this learning science involves close work with some of the top universities in the World to gain insight into how this teaching can be improved. The product is interesting and constantly evolving so as a junior software developer, you'll be tested and encouraged to contribute across the board in the small development team and as your experience continues to grow, you'll be helping with architecture, methodology and end to end life cycle ideas. Interesting point is that the chance will be there to spend time with the customers and listen to what they have to say - go and see the schools and see what this product is doing. If you come back with ideas on how this would work better, then make it happen. This team at the moment consists of two senior developers, two mid and one junior - this would be the 2nd junior role. This team will continue to grow and in this business, so will you. The technology: We need three key areas as an essential and then we open minded on the rest. Obviously personality and attitude go a long way and we are not looking for any code monkeys, but we need a junior full stack developer with a story to tell in the following: *Ruby on Rails *JavaScript *MySQL Open minded on the framework of choice so, Rails / Laravel, Grails or Django. It's your desire to adapt, adopt and make your previous knowledge contribute to the development environment. There is constant scoping of new technologies via Spike, and exposure to Node, Phoenix & Elixir would be great but we are open, and much of this is not set in stone for moving forward. If there is an enhancement and better way of doing things, work with the rest of the team and call this out. If you want to work on the latest innovations around and about AI to continue to develop intelligent educational and learning systems then this could be a win - win. You'll learn a lot in a non-stuffy, non-political software company and you'll earn a good living, work in a great environment & location but the fruits of your labour could make a genuine difference to people that otherwise could fall through the gaps in the system, so if that means something to you then drop us a line.
