Optical Design Engineer Based in Hertfordshire Job ref: AZ/39821 Salary: circa £40,000 Reporting to: Business Unit Manager This organisation has unrivalled expertise in optical design, development and manufacture. Their in-house dedicated team provides innovative specialist design solutions, whilst our dedicated global manufacturing sites ensure we have a local presence on a global scale. They have design, development and stock holding capabilities in the UK, USA, China and India. Custom design projects are an important area of the business that is growing and they have now completed a number of bespoke solutions for large multi-national luminaire manufacturers. Based in the Development and Distribution Centre in Hertfordshire, the Design Engineer will work as part of a small team responsible for design, prototyping and testing of optics. Responsibilities: Discuss, write & agree customer technical requirements for detailed design through to production parts, if necessary, working alone or in small cross-functional teams. Work with or lead Design & Engineering team(s) to generate new design concepts for customer applications & projects as well as 'in-house' design projects. Generate detailed 3D part geometries using CAD design software to aid optical simulation. Use optical simulation software to determine the critical geometry characteristics of new optical designs and enhance the design geometry to meet the design requirement specification. Carry out tolerance analysis on the effect of key part dimensions or position on optical performance. Supply 3D parts & 2D engineering drawings to Project Managers for tooling quotation requests. Use Design Change Note (DCN) procedure to update and record any controlled drawing changes. Lead and coordinate work (e.g. procurement of equipment, written instructions and training) to support optical testing when required at other company or Customer sites. Lead cross-functional teams to resolve customer quality or performance issues. Investigate new design methods and techniques (either independently, in teams or externally) to strengthen and enhance knowledge of optical techniques. Present design project material to design, engineering teams or customer during design reviews. Carry out presentations (when required) to promote the company's optical design capabilities at exhibitions & shows. Carry out internal training courses and provide material to help other company departments and sites to understand new optical products and concepts. Experience & Qualifications: Degree, HND level or equivalent qualification in Physics or a related Engineering course with optical content. Previous experience in Optical design with excellent knowledge of Optical design software e.g. Zemax or LightTools. Experience of LED Lighting product design Knowledge of Lighting market, including industry standards and specifications A good working knowledge of SolidWorks. An understanding of injection-moulding tooling methods and mould materials. Ability to lead or work well within a team. Excellent communication skills.
