Optical Design Engineer (Buckinghamshire,UK) Tier 1 automotive supplier in Buckingham is currently seeking an Optical Design Engineer. Based in the Development and Distribution Centre, the succesful canidate will work as part of a small team responsible for design, prototyping and testing of optics. Responsibilities: - Discuss, write & agree customer technical requirements for detailed design through to production parts, if necessary, working alone or in small cross-functional teams. - Work with or lead Design & Engineering team(s) to generate new design concepts for customer applications & projects as well as 'in-house' design projects. - Generate detailed 3D part geometries using CAD design software to aid optical simulation. - Use optical simulation software to determine the critical geometry characteristics of new optical designs and enhance the design geometry to meet the design requirement specification. - Carry out tolerance analysis on the effect of key part dimensions or position on optical performance. - Supply 3D parts & 2D engineering drawings to Project Managers for tooling quotation requests. - Use Design Change Note (DCN) procedure to update and record any controlled drawing changes. - Lead and coordinate work (e.g. procurement of equipment, written instructions and training) to support optical testing when required at other Carclo or Customer sites. - Lead cross-functional teams to resolve customer quality or performance issues. - Investigate new design methods and techniques (either independently, in teams or externally) to strengthen and enhance knowledge of optical techniques. - Present design project material to design, engineering teams or customer during design reviews. - Carry out presentations (when required) to promote optical design capabilities at exhibitions & shows. - Carry out internal training courses and provide material to help other departments and sites to understand new optical products and concepts. Experience & Qualifications: - Degree, HND level or equivalent qualification in Physics or a related Engineering course with optical content. - Previous experience in Optical design with excellent knowledge of Optical design software e.g. Zemax or LightTools. - A good working knowledge of SolidWorks. - A good understanding of injection-moulding tooling methods and mould materials. - Ability to lead or work well within a team. - Excellent communication skills. - Flexible attitude, ability to perform under pressure. - A commitment to producing quality designs and parts.
