FPGA and Embedded Hardware Engineer Location: West Drayton, UB7 7PN Salary: £50,000 to £60,000 Depending on experience About the company: Flight Data Systems is a multinational and vertically integrated aerospace product and services organisation operating for over 25 years with in excess of 50 staff based in offices across the UK, Australia and United States. As a niche services organisation with expertise in all aspects of aircraft crash recording systems (e.g. black boxes), it has customers for all aspects of this cycle; acquisition of digital and analog sensor information on the aircraft, recording of that information during flight, download at the aircraft, post analysis of the data, as well as final feedback to the operators of the aircraft. Duties of the FPGA and Embedded Hardware Engineer - Support development of our aerospace product lines including: - crash survivable recording systems (data, voice, imagery) - complex multi-channel and modular acquisition systems - digital sensors such as accelerometers, inertial systems - display systems - systems condition monitor (health and usage, weight and balance etc) - Involvement in comprehensive certification and documentation activities including creation of deliverables such as hardware requirements, hardware design documents, test procedures, verification and validation reports. - Interface directly with customers for regular project meetings including milestones such as preliminary and critical design reviews, production transition, test readiness reviews. - Support on-aircraft testing (both ground and flight) and debugging of complex systems Requirements of the FPGA and Embedded Hardware Engineer - Tertiary qualifications in Electronic Engineer, Digital Electronics, Hardware Engineering or similar - Significant experience in VHDL and digital electronics - Development of VHDL functionality for off-the-shelf electronic semiconductors such as analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog converters, SRAM or SDRAM devices, Ethernet controllers, non-volatile memories etc. Reviewing and comprehending component data sheets. - Experience with buses such as RS232, RS422, Ethernet, SPI, I2C, I2S etc. - Creation of test benches, low level simulations and timing analyses - Independent verification of work from other development engineers - Exposure to both highly controlled (i.e. waterfall) as well as agile, top down and bottom up development methodologies - Development of specifications and low level interface and technical documentation - Experience with change and configuration management including versioning processes - Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, including technical documentation Desirable experience includes - Development of software in an avionics environment including RTCA DO-254 Complex Electronics Design Assurance - FPGA based development with Altera FPGAs and tool chains - Electronics schematic capture and PCB layout with Altium CAD software - NIOS-II Soft Cores and other commercial off-the-shelf IP cores - Analog electronics and digital filters (FIR, FFT) - Experience with sensors such as strain gauges, DC, frequency inputs, thermocouples, accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers - Structural code coverage for safety systems - Avionics data buses including ARINC-429 and MIL-STD-1553 data buses - High speed electronics utilising LVDS or similar - C programming and interface between FPGA hardware and application software - Project management expertise including resource estimation, requirements definition and creation of work packages (Statements of Work) including ability to delicately balance short term requirements with long term agendas. - Mentoring, including selection, hiring and performance monitoring of junior engineers FPGA and Hardware Engineer Benefits: - 25 days holiday each year plus bank holidays Candidates for this role must be eligible to work on UK and US military aerospace programs.
