General Requirement

My client are new manufacturing company that launched this year, with an innovative and exciting product that is being taken to market. The company is branch off from another company that has acted as a distributor for the last 25 years, so their market knowledge is very strong.

They are currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their NPD/NPI team.

The successful candidate will be a team player with a creative flair, comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary environment as part of a small development team bringing innovative new products to market. This will include, but not be limited to the design of mechanical aspects of products and related test, calibration and production equipment.

Job Purpose & Role

·As the mechanical designer, you will take responsibility for all mechanical engineering aspects of the business. Working independently and proactively within a multidisciplinary team as the local design authority, the role includes:

·Mechanical design of innovative low volume products and supporting equipment; from requirement specifications, up to transfer to manufacturing including assembly/fabrication, testing, verification and validation of engineering prototypes.

·Investigation of new technologies, trends and techniques.

·Working closely with the electronics and optics engineers.

·Liaison with sub-contractors, customers and suppliers.

·Producing high quality technical reports supported by calculation, simulation and/or lab tests.

·Occasional travel to customers, suppliers, conferences, seminars & trade shows etc. in the UK, Europe and worldwide.

·Ensuring all Company procedures are adhered to - especially H&SE and Quality requirements.

·Responsibility for the design and upkeep of the product development testing facility/rigs.

Essential skills

·SolidWorks 3-D Modelling experience.

·Fluent in both spoken and written and English.

Desirable skills

·Appreciation of electronics and/or optics an advantage.

·Product certification requirements (ATEX/IECEx/FM/UL/CSA).


·3D Printing.

Ideal Background

·A formal engineering qualification, such as HND/HNC (preferably a university degree) in either; mechanical engineering | design | mechatronics | opto-mechanics and an academic track record or equivalent hands on industrial experience.

·An appreciation of design for hazardous areas.

·Experience in industrial segment.

·Excellent understanding of the design process and constraints.

·Confident to ‘stand-alone’ whilst receptive to new concepts and designs.

·A genuine interest in technology development.

·Excellent communication skills and ability to influence.

·Strong organisational, multi–tasking and time-management skills.

·An understanding/experience of the Oil & Gas industry advantageous, but not essential.

·A good working knowledge of relevant directives and standards associated with electro-mechanical equipment (PED, Mechanical ATEX etc).


·Ideally 3+ years in a similar industry role.
