Job Purpose

To undertake sound financial management practices such as budget, cash control, financial analysis and reporting to aid the management and financial strength of the company now and as it grows.

To be a member of the organisations Board of Directors to ensure that decisions are based on sound financial information.

To ensure a business wide best practice, and knowledge sharing culture is actively embraced.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership and management

·Promote the company’s vision, core values and establish an empowered culture around these values.

·Establish with the Directors an annual business plan and monitor progress against the plan to ensure objectives are attained as cost-effectively and efficiently as possible.

·To attend and contribute to Director meetings and internal team meetings.

·To represent the company to clients, professional bodies, suppliers and general public in line with the company's ethos, culture and values.

·To develop and lead continuous improvement activity to deliver the company’s aims and growth plans.

·Lead, motivate and inspire the finance team to effectively deliver key client outcomes and achieve market-leading client satisfaction by:

  • Recruiting and retaining suitably qualified and experienced members of staff
  • Setting, monitoring and managing performance against key accountabilities and KPIs
  • Identifying and implementing suitable training and development opportunities

  • Financial Management

    ·Take responsibility for process design to ensure operational efficiency, effective resource utilisation, order fulfilment, accuracy and cost controls.

    ·Produce management information reports for the Board to demonstrate performance against KPI’s, encompassing both operational and financial performance targets.

    ·Assist the Company in meeting its operational, commercial and contractual obligations in a safe and profitable manner.

    ·With the Managing Director create and update a forecast and monitor on rolling monthly basis, against end of year targets. Identify and communicate concerns to the Directors.

    ·Develop company policies for controlling the budgets and costs.

    ·With the Directors annually compile the financial year’s budget and monitor monthly performance against this. Report on variances at month end to the Directors providing details of causes for each variance.

    ·Manage financial control within company budgets to actively reduce cost base to a minimum operational level to maximize revenue opportunities.

    ·Forecast costs, monitor actual spend against forecasts and cash flow

    ·Produce and maintain a rolling Short Term Cash Flow forecast and continually monitor and manage cash position.

    ·Proactively review the organisation working capital position, engaging with Directors to take corrective action as required and using funding facilities to balance any shortfall.

    ·On a daily basis identify any potential problems or issues with the cash flow position, discuss with the Managing Director and make recommendations as appropriate.


    Year End Accounts

    ·Work alongside the Managing Director and the company’s accountants in producing Year End Accounts. Provide them with all requisite information, including making files and collate information available for the audit.

    Expenditure & Capital Expenditure

    ·Assist supplier selection and authorisation of all the company’s expense invoices

    ·Work with Directors on capital expenditure projects to ensure that financial viability is fully assessed.

    ·On a monthly basis, review actual expenditure against budgeted, identify and investigate variances and make recommendations to address these to the Management Board.

    Bank Liaison

    ·Be the main point of contact with the bank and take responsibility for liaising with them on any financial matters related to the company.

    ·Ensure that the banks information requests are met in a timely manner and that all covenant reporting/monitoring is up to date.

    Financial analysis, interpretation and Management Information

    ·Produce monthly management accounts within 10 working days of the end of the period to include full variance analysis and commentary.

    ·Identify and provide appropriate detailed financial analysis on a monthly basis using appropriate benchmark data where applicable.

    ·Provide support and assistance to the Directors for financial information.


    Experience and Skills Required

    ·Senior finance management experience in an environment where customer satisfaction is key. Experience of working in a logistics environment would be preferable.

    ·Must be CIMA / ACCA qualified

    ·Experience of working within a team of Directors who have indepth industry knowledge and managing a finance team is essential.

    ·A very good understanding of the underlying systems and controls required to secure sound and effective financial management.

    ·Substantial experience of budget setting, managing and controlling

    ·Experience of financial analysis and preparing and communicating management reports to non-financial professionals that aid the management of the company.

    ·Strong numerical and IT skills with advanced experience of Microsoft products and thorough awareness of technological advancements and efficiencies in general

    ·Positive, can-do attitude with the desire to find the solution to any problem.

    ·Strong negotiation and influencing skills with the ability to challenge, persuade others and provide feedback in a positive and collaborative manner.

    ·Ability to work and thrive in a busy and time sensitive environment, demonstrating initiative, enthusiasm and the ability to multi-task

    ·Excellent communication and relationship building skills with colleagues, suppliers and customers including the ability to explain sometimes complex financial matters in a clear and understandable manner.

    ·Strong organisation skills with the ability to work flexibly, under pressure and to tight, regular deadlines
