Materials Engineer The company is a global high-tech company and one of the key players within the Defence sector in the UK; they have over 45,600 employees globally, and employ over 4000 in the UK. Southampton has been home to the company and its predecessor companies' centre of excellence for infrared detectors since the 1950s. In 2014, the company opened a new £10m facility on Millbrook Industrial Park, bringing together people from three previously separate sites on the South Coast. The consolidated location now houses around 400 staff and hosts some of the company's communications, optronics and air traffic management products, along with several key airborne and marine technologies. Location: Southampton Salary: £35000 Skills: Process, Semiconductors, Epitaxial growth, physics OR Material science Working as part of a team in the Materials Group, you will provide a hands-on role in the growth and characterisation of epitaxial layers of narrow band-gap semiconductor using MOVPE. This will demand a varied knowledge of physics, chemistry and general engineering skills together with the ability to liaise with internal and external customers. Tasks will include operation/maintenance of a pc-controlled epitaxial reactor, including substrate preparation, and assessment of epitaxial layers using microscopy, FTIR, transport properties, etc. In addition, we are scaling-up the growth process capability and the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the optimisation of the growth process and problem solving. Key Responsibility Areas - Provide MOVPE growth and characterisation capability - Assist in development of MOVPE growth process - Maintain and develop MOVPE databases - Remain aware of new growth and characterisation developments - Maintain safe working environment in MOVPE labs - Support bulk CMT growth and element purification - Ensure process conforms to quality procedures - Liaise with suppliers and internal customers. Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required - The level of qualifications and experience will determine the initial level of the job but ultimately an engineer is required to satisfy the requirements within the group. A degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science and/or relevant technical experience is required. - A technical background, preferably with knowledge of process engineering, semiconductor physics or epitaxial growth - Characterisation techniques (optical, electrical, structural) - Computer literate with spreadsheets/databases/word processing and preferably SAP - Good presentation skills - To be comfortable with working alone or in a small group, potentially including shift working - Hands on processing and characterisation in a cleanroom environment - Effective communicator at all levels - Safety conscious, working with hazardous substances - Manual Dexterity - PC Literate
