VAT & Customs Specialist

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a VAT and Customs Specialist to join our finance team. Working closely with our Indirect Tax Manager, you will be responsible for managing compliance with VAT and Customs Duty regulations and acting as an advisor for the Mercedes-Benz wholesale and retail entities.

About the role

The key focus for this role is the management of the Group UK VAT compliance timetable including the preparation and submission of all relevant quarterly VAT returns, payments on account and quarterly payments

You will be a crucial member of the team as you continuously maintain a review of the business and new business practice to ensure compliance with all necessary VAT and Customs regulations, implementing new processes where appropriate.

Other key responsibilities within this exciting opportunity include:

- The provision of an internal VAT and Customs consultancy service to the business. This will involve technical research (including dealing with external professional advisors where necessary) to ensure that appropriate VAT treatment is considered and adopted.
- Reconciliation of all VAT accounts in the General Ledger including the duty deferment accounts
- Management of cross border VAT processes including foreign VAT registrations and the recovery of foreign input VAT, ensuring the company's processes and controls allow recovery to be maximised
- Management of the ICS and Senior Accounting Officer controls documentation and testing process relevant to VAT; identification, communication and timely remediation of all control weaknesses
- Management of all other indirect tax reporting and compliance matters, including UK and Belgian Intrastat and EC Sales List reports, import processes and vehicle customs clearance


About you

It goes without saying that a thorough understanding of VAT and customer regulations (UK and ideally EU) is essential for this opportunity backed up with demonstrable experience within a similar role.

A detailed knowledge of EC Sales and Intrastat reporting is also essential as is a methodical and organised approach to your role.

As this role deals with a large stakeholder group, first class communication skills are critical to the success of the role as you will be dealing with people at all levels both internally and externally. Ideally you will be ATT qualified (or equivalent) or working towards the qualification.
