Contract Type
Full Time
At Sky Betting & Gaming we don't have Teams we have Tribes. Each Tribe is made up of small, agile and autonomous squads who work collaboratively with a shared purpose.

So whether you join our Bet Tribe, Early Careers Tribe or anything in between, you will work with a group of people with raw energy, natural talent, and the kind of spirit that helps us think big, act bold, and change the game.

It all means that we've created the kind of workplace that wins awards such as a place on the prestigious list of Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For.

What you'll do:

Work as part of an agile, multi-disciplinary team to deliver and run highly available, high throughput web applications across the Sky Bet product. Be the voice of operations for the squad to guarantee the "full stack" is considered to ensure the best customer experience.

Act as a multidisciplinary expert for all operational concerns, with a deep understanding in certain fields (e.g. network, security, database, performance, capacity), ensuring best practices are applied throughout the lifecycle of our products.

Work with the architect, developers, testers and technical lead to encourage and challenge everyone to think about how reliable applications and services will be delivered and maintained. Promote a DevOps culture throughout the squad and wider tribe.

How you'll do it:

Reporting to the Operations Manager you will also have strong relationships with the engineering manager and technical lead for the squad.

You will:

· Identify and investigate performance problems or reliability issues down to a specific line of code or fault. Provide tuning or recommendations for improvements.

· Work closely with squads to promote a DevOps culture. Providing training and tools where suitable to empower them in the future.

· Challenge and influence new applications and services ensuring all operational considerations are covered and guarantee we are delivering the right thing in the right way.

· Design, build and run services for application deployment, systems orchestration and configuration management.

· Be a strong generalist that can evaluate, pickup and explain new concepts and technologies quickly and effectively.

How we work:

· Yes, we do gambling. No, we don't have a high-pressure, competitive environment. Your colleagues want you to succeed as much as you do.

· We encourage squad autonomy. If you don't like the way something is done, do something about it!

· We use private and public cloud, automate the simple stuff and measure all the things so we can focus on the right problems.

· We value previous experience building and supporting high throughput & highly available services.

· Friday afternoons are your personal learning and development sessions. Use this time to spend your £1000 Tech Ninja fund, collaborate with your colleagues - we want you to be excited about this!

· Our engineers work closely with colleagues in all positions, so a high level of interpersonal skill is important to us. We need everyone in the squad to understand the goal for the week.

· We are not building a monolithic enterprise app - think micro-services and a lean approach with quick running tests, automation and deployment.

· We promote incremental deliveries: giving value to the business quickly through feature-based delivery, observing and adapting as you go.

· We build it, we run it. Provide out of hours support as a squad for live incidents with developers and other operations engineers.

Skills and Technologies

The role is multi-disciplinary and benefits from having a varying understanding in the following areas:

· We are a RHEL/CentOS house so a very good understanding of Linux is essential.

· We have some typical LAMP stacks, though Mongo, Redis, Memcached and RabbitMQ also feature highly.

· We have our own private cloud but also use AWS and Kubernetes for hosting.

· We use React for UI.

· We write our code in PHP and Javascript, making heavy use of Node.js. There's the usual mixture of bash, a little Python, and some Ruby.

· Our source control is Git.

· We make heavy use of Chef for our configuration management but experience of this or other CM tools is necessary.

· We have heavy integration with OpenBet systems underpinning our sportsbook and gaming services.

· We make use of Graphite, Grafana, New Relic, Splunk and Opsview for monitoring out services.

We will consider remote working (with at least 50% of time being in the base office), part-time working and flexible hours to accommodate your personal circumstances, providing we can meet our business needs.

We also offer an attractive relocation package for candidates that live outside the Yorkshire region, including those outside the UK.

Our People Ambition is to attract & develop diverse & talented people to meet the current and future growth needs of SB&G. Together, our aim is to create the Best Digital Business to work at.
