Job Description

Linux Application & Database Specialist Working as part of a team the Linux Application & Database Specialist (SysAdmin) will be responsible for the deployment, maintenance, operation and technical support of Unix & Database applications across all development, test, pre-production and production environments. Working with other teams the Linux Application & Database Specialist will ensure resolution of incidents / problems and always put the customer first. You will also work within project teams to help design and implement IT projects whilst mentoring others.

Linux Application & Database Specialist responsibilities: • Provide technical leadership on open source technologies, being the “expert sysadmin”
• Ensure Yodel IT is the IT Supplier of choice
• Lead technical open source work-streams within projects directing Solution Architects
• Ensure that technical delivery follows the approved scope and design
• Coach and develop other technical team members on open source technologies (inc databases)
• Responsibility and accountability for the support of open source products – you will be the “expert” in this field; Understanding the limits of products/technologies and identifying high level options to overcome in order to fulfil customer business need / fit with strategy
• Responsible for understanding and capturing requirements, using additional resources where appropriate
• Responsible for translating requirements into YODEL language, producing documentation according to YODEL specific standards.
• Responsible for liaising with ‘subject matter experts’ where additional product knowledge is required
• Responsible for ensuring that all designs include an appropriate network or solution management component to support monitoring, reporting and capacity planning
• Responsible for engaging with the Enterprise Architecture function, seeking architecture board design sign off
• Delivery and support of Opensource technologies, in a timely, cost effective, and efficient way, balancing the use of resources appropriately
• Management of performance of systems and services in terms of their contribution to business performance and their financial costs

Linux Application & Database Specialist skills and experience: • Apache/Tomcat web services
• Configuration management – Ansible
• AMQP message queues – Rabbitmq/Kafka
• CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins and Git
• Database server Administration – MongoDB, MYSQL, Elasticsearch, MSSQL (on Linux),
• Linux distributions - Ubuntu/CentOS/SUSE
• Automation and Scripting – Bash, Python
• ORACLE
• Ensures that adequate documentation is produced and maintained

Education:

Educated to bachelor degree level and / or holds a relevant professional qualification. Extensive demonstrable experience and understanding of Linux technologies in a consulting capacity.
