Lead Systems Engineer

Job Description
Leonardo Airborne and Space Systems is looking to recruit a Lead Safety Engineer based at its site in Edinburgh. The role will involve defining project safety requirements and providing guidance to projects on product safety issues. The role will also require the successful applicant to review the evidence supporting the safety certification of products including monitoring the hazard tracking system and actively managing the safety risks. The role will be based in Edinburgh and targeted at products for fixed wing platforms in the military aviation domain, requiring the successful applicant to be fully conversant with standards including DEF-STAN 00-055 and DEF-STAN 00-056. However, knowledge and experience of other domains and some travel both in the UK and internationally will be expected.

The role is to provide product safety management support to projects and engineering activities at Edinburgh. This includes reviewing customer requirements; identifying applicable regulations, legislation and standards and defining associated requirements; approving safety management plans; conducting, documenting and managing hazards and risk assessments and mitigation strategies; and developing robust arguments for safety cases.

Key Responsibility Areas

  • Definition of Product Safety requirements derived from Customer requirements, Company requirements and emergent properties of the design.
  • Provision of technical support to product and other legislative compliance issues, including EMC.
  • Engineering representation at project safety forums as required.
  • Represent projects at design reviews and product lifecycle phase reviews to provide specialist input.
  • Carry out independent safety assessments on products from the supply chain within the project to support reviews where required.
  • Sign off Safety Cases.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in an appropriate discipline (preferably Electrical and Electronic Engineering).
  • Experience in the key process activities performed by Systems Engineers and how product safety fits into them.
  • The ability to know how to tailor process associated with super-system capability issues across a broad range of system developments to suit specific project/contract needs.
  • Knowledge of the applicable safety standards in the military aviation domain.
  • An understanding of the requirements for certifying products in the military aviation domain. Has experience in dealing with regulators and certification authorities within the military aviation domain.
  • An understanding of the certification and compliance requirements associated with products which fall into scope of product safety legislation requiring the application of a conformity assessment mark.
  • An understanding of the lifecycle management processes and product safety policies upon which a Safety Management System (SMS) is based. Understands how to tailor the SMS processes to meet both project and Customer requirements. Is able to provide guidance and/or training on the SMS. Has regularly used all of the SMS process and/or reviewed and sentenced applications for product safety processes.
  • Knowledge of how to review the legislative compliance of a project external supplier.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work processes to satisfy regulatory and statutory requirements. Has considerable experience in the provision of product-related Health and Safety expert services.
  • Knowledge of how to produce a Safety Management Plan for multi-system products and provide guidance to others on acceptable tailoring of the SMS process. In the absence of other definition, has set safety targets.
  • Knowledge of how to plan and lead a safety assessment programme and present the results of the programme.
  • An understanding of the type of hazards that may cross product and/or system boundaries and the type of hazards that are present in systems above those normally encountered.
  • Have led the safety assessment of a project and has presented authoritative assurance of the safety of the resultant product or service.
  • Knowledge of a number of documents that define the structure of Safety Cases.
  • An understanding how to structure a Safety Case Report for a relatively complex product in accordance with one or more of these documents.
  • Experience in reviewing a Safety Case Report with regard to both persuasive content and structure/layout. Has created acceptable safety case reports for complex systems in accordance with one or more of the defining documents.
  • Have provided guidance and/or advice to projects and suppliers on requirements for Safety Cases and reviewed the resultant documentation for acceptability.
  • Knowledge of the correct legal procedures that must be followed regarding the incident investigation process, who to inform and how to correctly interview witnesses.
  • Have helped determine the most likely root cause of an accident.
  • Have led the communication of findings and recommendations to the stakeholders and undertaken follow-up action to ensure that the recommendations or some equally acceptable alternative solutions have been implemented.
  • The ability to speak with confidence on product safety matters.
  • Have actively contributed to Project Safety Committee meetings. Has independently reviewed safety documents and has performed safety management audits.

Intrinsic Factors
This is an office-based role using display screen equipment, working full time hours, with occasional travel throughout the UK and Italy.
