Purpose of the Role: As a Dimensional Management engineer, you engage at the very front end of the conceptual design process and play an integral role within the project team to influence the style as well as product and process design for manufacturing and quality target adherence. The dimensional management process demands critical inputs from Styling, Design, Manufacturing and Quality to prove out multiple concepts so as to derive an optimal vehicle dimensional strategy. This function is crucial to integrating major vehicle systems; its outputs provide the basis for supplier measurement and gauging activity as well as the design of major body assembly jigs and framing fixtures. This is a challenging area to develop in, giving a complete system view of the vehicle and a detailed knowledge of the various component manufacturing processes. The role develops interpersonal and communication skills by challenging the ability to persuade convince and guide with assertion, while building important relationships at all levels both internally and externally across the business. Role Scope: - To work as part of the New Product Quality team, having close interaction with all function groups. Involvement begins at the front end of conceptual design process, working cross-functionally to develop, and define a complete dimensional control concept. This concept is used to evaluate the product and process design capability against critical quality targets for major vehicle systems, including exterior and interior. - Develop a thorough understanding of the various component manufacturing processes with respect to best practice tooling philosophies. - Understand commercial impacts and business constraints in relation to component quality expectations - Apply 3D Tolerance simulation analysis/Digital simulation tools to prove out multiple concepts and ultimately validate the effectiveness of the optimal complete vehicle concept. - Expose problems at an early stage of product development and communicate to the business, thus finding optimal design solutions. - Understand and orientate simulation results to direct business metrics - Ensure FT&A/GD&T in released designs is in accordance with BS:8888 ISO:1101 and supports vehicle dimensional concept in context to downstream manufacturing processes. - Develop a thorough knowledge of the complete vehicle to support problem resolution. - Support the closed loop process of data feedback from actual measurements for modelling accuracy improvements - Training would be provided, where required, in the use of 3DCS and Aesthetica simulation software together with GD&T methodology to the appropriate level. Principal Accountabilities: Dimensional Management: - Build tolerance simulation models to evaluate design concept capability - Collate reports against vehicle aesthetic and functional targets - Generate quality target documentation in line with perceived quality expectations - Support generation of location strategies and communication documentation - Raise concerns to the business and follow through to resolution - Orientate simulation results to business metrics: e.g. Cost of failure analysis - Analyse actual measurement data to support tolerance simulation modelling - Manage, present and maintain evaluation data - Support design concept decision making process - Provide Input to manufacturing assembly sequence and assembly concept decision making process Provide GD&T support to Engineering: - Provide support in generating GD&T concepts which supports the vehicle dimensional strategy affecting assembly jigs, fixtures and measurement plans Provide Build Phase support: - Resolve build issues and support design changes Knowledge, Skills and Experience: - Exposure to design and production of complex assemblies would be beneficial. - Basic understanding of jig and fixture concepts. - Methodical approach to work with strong analytical skills. - Self-starter capable of using initiative. - Good problem solving ability - Basic understanding of SPC, statistics and process capabilities - Basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing - Good CAD skills, preferably CATIA V5. - Basic understanding or experience in CAD based simulation tools Personal Attributes: Must show initiative, have good interpersonal skills and work well within a team, show flexibility and have an ability to effectively communicate challenging technical issues to engineering, quality and production engineers. Attention to detail, diligence, good project management skills and the ability to communicate and influence others are essential to this role.
