Serco manage HMP Dovegate which is a category B prison based in Uttoxeter- Staffordshire. We care for over 1060 male adult prisoners, age 21 and above all serving a range of sentences including trial, remand, awaiting sentence and convicted males serving over four years to life.





HMP Dovegate aim is to provide a safe, decent, secure and respectful environment that encapsulates a wide range of constructive activities. The regime both combine and embraces accredited education/training, vocational training, work, counselling and offending behaviour programmes all aimed at reducing criminogenic risk and thereby aiding release and resettlement of offenders.





We are currently looking to recruit a Special Educational Needs (SEN) Tutor to work at HMP Dovegate. This role will require you to work 40 hours per week. The salary for this role is £26132- £28246 per annum.





We foster prisoners learning to ensure they have the necessary skills, confidence and achievements to help reduce reoffending and enable them to gain employment upon release. Teaching offenders is a challenging but rewarding experience and this is an exciting opportunity to make a difference.





Overview of the Role





Within this role you will be responsible for Planning, organising, and assigning activities that are specific to each student’s abilities and based upon the outcome of the individuals assessment.





You will also act as a mentor for the students in a class room, small groups, and one-on-one basis. Alongside mentoring students you will be accountable for supervising teachers and teaching assistants who work with students with disabilities, and maintain accurate records, including learner attendance, records of work, progression routes and levels of achievement.





Your core responsibilities will include;



  • Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans.

Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students.
Develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for each student.
Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities.
Discuss student’s progress with teachers, administrators and other departments.
Supervise and mentor teachers and teaching assistants who work with students with disabilities.
Maintaining accurate records, including learner attendance, records of work, progression route and levels of achievement.
Presenting reports for recruitment, retention and achievement and other performance reports as required.
Establishing and maintaining positive and professional relationships with learners, to create an appropriate environment for learning.
Managing resources within budget; carefully managing the use of equipment and resources actively encouraging learners to value them.
To provide learners with feedback and guidance to support their learning on a regular basis.

About You





You will be passionate about making a difference in the lives of the people you support. Due to the nature of this role you must be someone who can demonstrate high levels of patience, emotional resilience, have a keen commitment to educate people as well as assertiveness, the ability to cope with pressure/working to deadlines and the ability to exercise authority.





To be considered for this role you must, as a minimum hold a level 4 award in Education and Training (QCF) certificate in education/ PGCE or equivalent. Due to nature of the role you must possess a SEN and Assessors Qualification (SpLD)





You will have proven experience of working in an environment that demands strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and have a thorough understanding of the JCQ Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments.



Experience of a custodial environment would be an advantage but not essential.





You will be able to form good working relationships and establish strong internal and/or external links as required. Responding to identified needs by undertaking self-directed learning, research and training is required.
