Job Title: Able Seafarer Deck Apprentice

Location: Serco Limited, BUTEC, Kyle of Lochalsh, IV40 8AJ

Working Week: 40 Hours Per Week, Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:00 (this may vary)

Salary: £11,024-£13,936 per annum

Expected Apprenticeship Duration: 24 Months

Interview Start Date: 2nd October 2017

Serco Marine Services deliver marine support packages tailored to our customers’ needs all delivered within a national accreditation framework. As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbour work boats to ocean going support vessels, we provide world class integrated marine services both in the UK and abroad.

Our support operation at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC) at Kyle of Lochalsh, provides a range of support services including diving support, range safety, target and test equipment recovery, range maintenance, underwater monitoring and passenger transfer.

We are currently recruiting for an exciting opportunity to undertake mandatory training and sea service to obtain Able Seafarer (Deck) qualification through assisting vessel crew in deck operations.

Main Responsibilities

As part of this role, you will be expected:

  • To work as a member of the deck department on-board assigned vessels.

To learn and perform watchkeeping duties during day or night shifts, both in port and at sea. These duties will include keeping a lookout on a sea passage during daylight or darkness as required by the vessel master.
To perform housekeeping duties to maintain vessel cleanliness including accommodation and other workareas of the vessel.
To learn and perform routine maintenance of the vessel and its equipment.
To maintain own safety and security and that of the other persons, vessel and its equipment, cargo and environment whilst employed on-board.
To learn and operate mooring winches, windlass, cranes, watertight doors, life saving and firefighting appliances or other equipment as required by the master.
To learn and perform all tasks as required in the Able Seafarer (Deck) Training record book.
To obtain the required sea service in the time period allocated by the line manager.
To comply with the UK MCA’s Merchant Navy Code of Conduct at all times.
To undertake other duties commensurate with the level of the post as may be reasonably required from time to time.

Required Skills:

Qualifications Required:

GCSE’S A-C or equivelant in Maths and English

You will also need to complete an initial assessment, which will help us guide you to the most appropriate programme to meet your needs.

Specific Requirements

It is essential that you:

  • Have a valid UK passport as some overseas travel may be required.

Are capable of obtaining an ENG1 Unrestricted Medical Certificate including eyesight examination. An offer of apprenticeship will be made subsequent to obtaining ENG1 certificate.

Additional Information

For duties on Serco’s vessels, it is highly essential that you are able to travel to BUTEC, Kyle of Lochalsh on a daily basis to arrive for work on time. You are expected to arrange your own accommodation/travel when assigned to vessels locally.

For out of port vessel assignment, you may be required to complete at least 6 months seatime where you will be expected to live on board for varios durations until the required seatime is complete and/or the vessel assignment ends.
