MDS are a leading provider of convergent real-time charging, billing and customer management solutions. With offices in Warrington and Limerick, MDS managed service solutions support customers across Europe and North America, including BT, Dixons Carphone, Eir, TalkTalk and Telefonica UK. We are recruiting for a Principal Software Engineer to join our existing team located in either the Warrington or Limerick office. The Principal Software Engineer will effectively and efficiently lead and perform the design and development of enhancements to our product suite, solving challenging technical problems and defining the best practices and standards for software development across MDS, as well as trialling new techniques and software solutions. Taking the lead in the technical software design and estimation activities, you'll define design patterns to be used during development, review detailed designs by the team as well as produce your own when required, ensuring that problems are resolved and that your team is meeting agreed quality, cost and time targets to ensure the success of the wider project. The role will require you to be a leading member of a cross functional team, working across a range of enterprise scale products and will also involve line management of a small team of software engineers. Working closely with the Head of Development, you'll define and deliver against departmental objectives, recommend changes in policies and tactics, define processes and help to grow and improve the Software Development team through hiring and developing talent as well as mentoring, coaching and performing code reviews to continuously improve job knowledge of languages, tools and trends. You are: - A strong problem solver with strong technical leadership experience - Experienced in developing and maintaining positive working relationships with others and have credibility with peers and senior managers - Self-motivated and able to motivate others to keep morale and performance high and take pride in meeting team objectives - Able to demonstrable knowledge of a software development methodology and structured approaches to development - Experienced in the leading and motivation of others to deliver quality software - Able to read and write technical documentation - Experienced in introducing and embedding industry best practices to teams - Keen to shares ideas and information - Passionate about continuous improvement You have: - Expert programming skills in Java - An ability to write clean, simple performant code - Expert understanding of web-services and SOA, ideally RESTful APIs - Solid experience of databases, data modelling and SQL - Experience of complex refactoring techniques - Test Driven Development (TDD) - Automated Testing - First hand experience of Lean and Agile practices - Expert knowledge of Continuous Delivery techniques - Pair Programming experience - Expert knowledge of Design Patterns - Software analysis and design knowledge/experience - Solid knowledge of Telecoms data - Solid knowledge of using SCM tools - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Troubleshooting skills - Comfortable working on large scale, complex systems You may have: - Understanding of JavaScript frameworks such as Ember.js - Experience of distributed computing platforms such as Hazelcast - Experience of DB2 on Linux or IBMi - Experience of IBMi Operating Systems
