The role

The Stuart Low Trust is seeking a Chair to join their board. The organisation aims to improve health and wellbeing by reducing social isolation within the community. The present Chair and founder of the Stuart Low Trust is now retiring after dedicating nearly 20 years to the Trust.

The SLT Trustees are unusual in their dedication and commitment, with a number of the Trustees taking a real ‘hands on’ role, such as taking part in fundraising, and leading and helping at events. The Trustees are part of the core of what makes SLT such a success. The successful candidate will be joining this very collaborative board and will have the exciting opportunity to take the organisation forward whilst developing the invaluable work the Trust carries out. As Chair you will also work in partnership with the CEO and support the staff at SLT, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation whilst ensuring harmony between the Board of Trustees and the senior staff.

In addition to providing your strategic leadership and governance to the board, you will also act as an ambassador for SLT. In this role you will support the public reputation of the charity, extend networks of influence and promote the value of SLT’s work to wider networks.

If you feel that you could embrace the values of the organisation and share their commitment to providing vital support to the community of Islington, then we would love to hear from you.

Person Description

  • Previous experience of chairing meetings
  • Experience of strategic planning and implementation
  • Strong networking skills to help build relationships and partnerships that will benefit SLT
  • Able to take the organisation forward to best satisfy the needs of the community in relation to the aims of SLT
  • Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively
  • Ability to motivate staff and volunteers and bring people together
  • Basic knowledge of the mental health field and the issues which the SLT beneficiaries face

  • Knowledge of Islington would be very beneficial

What impact the opportunity will have

The work of SLT is strongly valued by its clients. For example, 76% reported greater wellbeing since attending SLT activities and 67% felt more cheerful overall. In addition, the work of SLT has been recognised by a number of award-giving bodies: in 2015 it won the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, whilst employees of the British Medical Journal chose SLT as their small charity of the year in 2014, 2015 and 2016. SLT also has a good relationship with Islington Council who have supported their work for many years. As Chair you will play a vital role in ensuring the organisation continues to carry out their work effectively and efficiently, whilst also helping to build upon the wonderful impact SLT already has.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

As Chair you will be joining a friendly, inclusive and welcoming organisation. Members of the board are encouraged to occasionally attend SLT events and activities, such as the popular Friday evening events. This will give you the opportunity to see the direct impact SLT has and to meet some of the beneficiaries of the charity.

The role of Chair is key to SLT achieving its strategic aims and objectives. It is an opportunity to make a real difference in the local community and to people's lives by continuing to reduce social isolation, alleviate mental distress, and increase social inclusiveness and confidence.

Time commitment

Mostly outside office hours.

Board meetings are held about eight times per year. Occasional weekly Friday evening events and sometimes meet fundraisers and supporters.
