Chair of Trustees
About the organisation
FareShare East Midlands are part of the national FareShare network. The objects of the charity are:
- The relief of poverty in England by redistributing surplus good quality food from food producers and retailers to charitable organisations working with disadvantaged individuals for the production of meals and the distribution of food parcels.
- The furtherance, for the benefit of the public, of the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical environment through the reduction of waste (in particular food waste) and its adverse environmental impacts.
Operating from two warehouses, we take in good quality, surplus food from the food industry, which is sorted by our volunteer teams and distributed to our member groups, who are supporting people in, or at serious risk of food poverty. In 2017, we distributed 725 tonnes of food to c. 150 groups.
About the role
In order to strengthen our Board to take the charity into its second 10 years of operation, we are seeking to recruit two trustees, one of whom to take on the role of chair as our present Chair is retiring having been with us from the start. Having reviewed the situation, the trustees wish to strengthen the board in number, skills and leadership to reflect our rate and pace of growth; which we expect to continue. As a high performing charity we need people of the right calibre and best fit to lead us through the strategic challenges to come.
The key question for any potential chair of trustees is do you care passionately about our twin aims of fighting hunger and tackling food waste? FareShare is a fast growing charity in this vital sector and is held in high regard by government and the food industry. Hence, this is an exciting opportunity to bring intellectual skills and experience to really make a difference to the lives of thousands of people.
We seek to recruit someone who has the skills and experience to be the chair for the current and future size of our charity. That person will work closely with our vice chair in leading the board and charity.
Ideally, your professional background should be strategic leadership, planning and direction. You may already be a leader in the charity sector. Candidates should live and/or work in our main service area i.e. the Leicester/ Derby / Nottingham triangle.
The Trustee Board meets quarterly - half a day; plus there will be board workshops, etc. The chair will be in contact most weeks, visiting regularly.
