Salary: £35-£40,000 dependent on experience
Location: Swindon, Wiltshire
Reporting to: Technology Development Manager / Technical Director

Our engineering and manufacturing based client in Swindon, Wiltshire requires a Research Technologist to develop new lab facilities at their HQ in Swindon, Wiltshire

As a Research Technologist you will be required to set up a Laboratory and reduced scale process rig(s) in our clients newly extended headquarters building, then using these facilities, design & lead experiments aimed at enhancing product yield / quality / robustness and create new Intellectual Property on the process in accordance with the company’s Technology Road Map.

Responsibilities/daily tasks of the Research Technologist:
· Set up / manage and operate research laboratory including extracted enclosures.
· Responsible for overall Lab Safety.
· Design then operate a reduced scale testing rig that will replace the current bench scale pilot unit and represent more closely the operating conditions seen at full scale.
· Use this rig to establish the extent & nature of the contamination that can be tolerated by the process.
· Design experiments to test possible process enhancements, possibly leading to patents.
· Confirm chemical theory and the best set up of the process with each type / mix of plastics.
· Theoretical analysis on the effect of our process on chemical additives to plastics and experiments to test this effect.
· Engage with the Company's Academic Partners and Client organisations from the oil, wax & fuel industries.
· Work closely with the Product Engineer to set up / operate facilities & protocols for product testing.
· Input to the company business vision.
· Develop strategic alliances with Universities, Suppliers & technology / client companies as required.
· Manage, monitor & report into Government funded projects.
· Maintain Intellectual Property for the company’s technologies review process in regards to: Freedom to Operate; Proprietary content / key suppliers; Bespoke content – Trade Secrets, Develop patents.

Essential Skills of the Research Technologist:
· Recognised Qualification in Science or Chemical Engineering.
· A confident self-starter with proven experience of lab facilities set-up and operation.
· Proficiency working in a team environment with cross-functional groups to achieve significant goals under tight time and financial pressures on a process plant development.
· Possess excellent interpersonal skills to develop a range of solutions with the company’s Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing and Marketing teams.
· Experience / ability in managing intercompany & grant funded projects.
· Good communication, presentation and writing skills at all levels.

Desirable skills of the Research Technologist:
· Prior experience in Plastics, high temperature processes such as thermal cracking, heavy oil fractionation.
· Knowledge of Laboratory H&S and Oil and gas / petrochemical experience a distinct advantage.
