Synopsis
Our customer prides itself in being first to market for first class and business class seat configurations for which the use of novel materials is key. The role of Composite Technologist will join the UK engineering team to develop and implement new composite materials and processes. The role is across the design and manufacturing process and gives a unique perspective in how composites can be applies at the early stages in a true ‘design for manufacture’ capability.
Key Responsibilities:
Developing new designs and processes for composite materials to meet product requirements such as weight, stiffness and function.
Working closely with production and the final assembly line to ensure quality and assembly of composites.
Influencing and guiding the design to ensure design for manufacture.
Work in collaboration with the programme team to ensure that products meet cost and weight targets.
Responsible for the process and governance of design / analysis with respect to concession.
Liaise with internal and external customers, suppliers, departments and regulatory bodies as required.
Support the business with initiatives to drive continuous improvement of department processes and manuals and in developing new capabilities and methods.

Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience
HND / 2:1 Bachelors (Honours) degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Structural Engineering
MEng or PhD with specialism in aerospace discipline

Demonstrable working experience in industry or research work at an educational institution
Extensive experience working in an Aerospace or Automotive industry.

Experience of working to industry standards and codes.
Knowledge of Part 25 (EASA/FAA) and Boeing / Airbus specifications. Knowledge of ACs, ARPs and Aerospace Standards. Knowledge of aerospace material standards and material or component test standards and post-processing methods (e.g. ASTMs reserve factors and B-Basis calcs)

Experience with the design (ply lay-up) and manufacture of polymer reinforced composites (Epoxies, honeycomb panels...)
Knowledge of phenolic resin systems and flammability testing of composites

Experience of sizing and analyzing composite structures, both sandwich and monolithic types. Experience of reviewing composite tooling data.
Knowledge of composite tool design

Experience is assessing the quality of a composite as manufactured
Basic understanding of fractograpy
Skills. Competencies and personal attributes
Sound organizational and planning skills with ability to manage and meet deadlines. Enjoys challenging work.
Proficient in producing and managing Gantt charts. Experience of managing others.

Is a natural problem solver, skilled at rigorous analysis with a sound ability to make decisions based on a mixture of analysis, experience and judgement?
Proficient in root cause analysis. Proficient in dealing with large sets of data.
