Protection Settings Engineer

Job Purpose:

The Protection Settings team is integral part of Engineering Design in Capital Programme.

The role is primarily the production of protection settings for implementation across the UKPN network at all voltage levels 132kV to 415V. Largely based on accepted standards although bespoke and complex settings and reviews are often required, as such the team is a point of reference for settings throughout the networks business.

The successful applicant(s) will be based at the Alliance Hub and shall be capable of satisfying the following general requirements:

- Producing the protection settings and suitable relay logic.
- Suppling timely complete settings to customers and recording settings in asset management data records.
- Quality Assurance of colleagues work as well as those produced by others external partners where they are working on our behalf; to ensure they are fit for purpose.

- Attending Concept Design Review meeting(s) to ensure scope take due account of protection and control requirements.
- Reviewing and/or creating the protection block diagrams for approval pre or post gate B
- Supporting the wider UKPN business in technical matters relating to the job role.
- Being a point of reference in the business for settings queries
- Supporting the development of protection design standards for all grid and primary voltage levels (132kV to 11kV).
- Identifying innovative ways of providing network protection solutions that reduce costs.
- Assisting Asset Management to review protection mal operations.
- Reviewing and creating back up settings for ad hoc protection depletions created by major project works

Principal Accountabilities:

- Provide main and back up settings and suitable Programmable Scheme Logic, ensuring effective grading and clearance times for the running arrangements specified.
- Provide the above within parameters agreed by Asset Management and within agreed timescales
- Establishing or accepting protection block diagram and CT and VT specs for bespoke and standard protection design solutions.
- Using information provided by asset management, and using network analysis software check fault levels, undertakes fault studies and ensures system stability is provided by protection schemes within agreed parameters.
- Assessing completeness of settings applications and requesting additional information in a timely manner.
- Ensuring that internal cost control is completed by booking time spent to project numbers
- Supporting Asset Management by feedback of network modelling errors and assumptions required in the network modelling exercises.
- Supporting Asset Management by providing feedback of protection relay selection, standard setting arrangements, relay type codes and suitable software versions.
-Having sufficient understanding of Auto switching, CBF, Unit and non-unit schemes, Intertripping, Fibre and pilot communication and monitoring to enable the provision of feedback to Asset Management.
- Ensure that all new settings created and sent out are provided for input into Ellipse /SAP to ensure asset management records are maintained. (Note the responsibility for settings being returned form site for inclusion into asset management data bases is currently unclear.)
- Ensure that all settings sent out to our internal and external customers are quality assured to ED processes
- Collaborate with UKPN teams with respect to protection setting queries.
- Comment upon the Asset Management provision of site guides for site engineers to make on site settings changes
- Support and mentor each other in the development of professional engineering skills
- Reduction of CML / CI resulting from protection settings mal ops.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

- Electrical engineering background and experience in electrical engineering 415V network up to 132kV.
- A strong understanding of the power distribution network protection systems, at all voltage levels.
- Understanding of communication protocols where they apply to protection and control systems.
- Understanding, implementation and support of manufactures software applications web based applications
- Ability to understand and interpret a wide range of technical information ranging from complex technical manuals through to site drawings sematic and WDs.
- Ability to work unsupervised, set targets, and deliver setting as requested.
- Good interpersonal skills, and be competent in written and oral communications.
- Appreciation of internal, national and international standards relevant to the specifying of protection equipment and settings.
- Proficient in the use of desktop applications, in particular: Word, Excel, DIgSILENT, MathCAD, Manufactures interface software, Ellipse and SAP data base.
- Able to become Chartered Engineer/Incorporated Engineer level (via HND or degree in electrical engineering) with proven relevant experience.

Nature and Scope:

Largely a desk based, expert role the post also requires to be able to visit operational sites, construction sites, site meetings manufactures meetings and internal review meetings.
