The Vacancy

Concord Education are looking for a teacher of English for a small, mixed, 13-18 independent school in West London, that provides an alternative provision for KS4 / KS5 children undertaking GCSEs and/or Functional Skills qualifications. This is a 1 term contract for the Autumn term 2017 and represents a good opportunity, as the successful candidate will effectively be the Head of English”.

The School

This school caters for young people with lifelong learning difficulties, or disabilities (LLDD). A variety of programmes are developed targeting the challenges and social issues facing young people, such as education, employability, physical & mental health and tackling issues such as poverty and youth violence. Staff work in collaboration with young people and other services. Some of these programmes are universal, others are specifically targeted and include sports & outdoor education, health & wellbeing and arts & citizenship. All-round achievement is promoted and inter-personal skills, such as presenting and debating are encouraged.

There is a staff of 4 teachers (English, Maths, Science & RE/PSCHE) and additional welfare staff. The school has a capacity of 60 students, although numbers have fluctuated between approximately 10 – 30 in recent years. Concord believe this to be due to changes in premises, with a new building coming for September 2017 (we are seeking clarification).

Every young person is allocated to a key worker and supported through difficult times. A safe environment is created, where they can be challenged on some of the negative behaviours that may have been an issue in the past.

Ofsted confirm that regular students are successfully re-engaged in learning and can gain a range of qualifications/accreditations. The young people are well prepared for begin from very low starting points and make rapid progress to the point that they are prepared for life after school. Teachers and students form positive relationships that and students with challenging behaviours develop much more positive attitudes. Effective links with parents/carers/other professionals provide good support to students and families.
