Reporting directly to the Director of Technology the Database Administrator will be responsible for the performance, integrity and security of a production and pre-production databases supported by the Development department.

To the wider business including our Cloud Hosting business Cloud, the DBA will offer expertise, support and guidance to ensure our large database environments are maintained to industry best practices. Based in Essex for industry leading software house.

Main activities:

* Monitor database instances, identifying database performance and infrastructure warning indicators
* Work with Development teams on Schema design, query optimisation and other database related issues
* Analyse performance, recommend/apply indexes
* Manage and monitor maintenance plans
* Manage and create database backup and retention strategies, and ensure testing of system recovery is conducted and documented
* Installation and Upgrade of database instances, deployment of services and SSRS, which may require out of hours and/or weekend work depending on the deployment
* Manage and analyse the database solution in the development “Test Lab”
* Infrastructure patch management
* Be the central point of contact for all DBA queries
* Where required, assist clients with performance investigation, and database sizing recommendations.
* Attend where needed design workshops and meetings to gain a full understanding of database requirements
* Provide a support role (in terms of query performance) to the developers and testers throughout the full lifecycle of software development projects.
* Provide quality, well-structured concise and consistent documentation.
* Assist with project estimation and costing.
* Provide technical documentation for production and pre-production deployments
* Ensure that any complaints are dealt with in the most appropriate way.
* Maintain professionalism and commitment to continuous development through reading technical journals, undertaking research, customer visits, attending conferences and networking events.
* Openly and honestly communicate with colleagues.
* Represent the Company in a professional manner and appearance.

Where necessary, solutions of support calls may require site visits to fully understand and complete the call. This may require you to administer training and technical consultancy on behalf of the company and its products.

Knowledge and skills:

* Detailed understanding of structured query language (SQL)
* Problem and Fault solving
* Database Security
* Practical knowledge in High Availability and Disaster recover solutions for SQL Server
* Deep Knowledge of 'relational database management systems' (RDBMS), 'object oriented database management systems' (OODBMS) and XML database management systems
* Database performance tuning, including index and execution plan analysis
* SSRS deployment, backup and recovery
* Infrastructure monitoring and scaling
* Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
* Highly enthusiastic and self-motivated with an ability to attain results with minimal supervision
* Excellent situational analysis and decision making skills


* 5 Year + as a Database Administrator working with Microsoft SQL Server
* Support of production SaaS systems with high availability
* Work within a commercial software provider environment
* Sound experience of software development and project lifecycles
