Royal Mail has a new exciting and challenging role as a Senior VAT Manager. This unique role will provide the successful candidate the opportunity to work across the business in a FTSE 100 company.

The Group VAT position is complex and changing and this a vital role in ensuring compliance and minimising VAT costs. Ongoing legal developments and regulatory issues as well as new initiatives and acquisitions provide a great opportunity for any new recruit to quickly become a specialist in this unique area of VAT and offer the chance to be involved in some huge challenges. This role will provide significant opportunity to make significant additional savings including to external fees.

About the role

As the Senior VAT Manager you will play a key to role in managing indirect tax and relationships with tax authorities, advisors and business partners. Being an internally recognised expert source of knowledge on a very wide range of indirect tax issues your focus is primarily on VAT issues but encompasses all other indirect taxes.

You’ll provide technical support and advice on a variety of projects, e.g. IT systems and Brexit, to ensure compliance, minimise tax costs and maximise tax opportunities whilst supporting senior managers and advice to other team members on all areas of VAT compliance and planning. Reviewing the principal group VAT return and other UK and overseas subsidiary VAT returns, as required, will be key alongside managing preparation of partial exemption special method calculations and gathering relevant information from across the group.

Providing training and guidance to staff at various levels, you’ll identify opportunities for savings and process improvements to help ensure Cost Reduction targets are achieved. Whilst keeping abreast of changes in tax legislation and case law developments, you’ll determine VAT treatment of new products and income streams to ensure they’ve treated correctly within financial accounting systems

The role is based in Central London but occasional travel to Chesterfield will be required.

About You

With strong technical VAT ability (CTA or equivalent being advantageous), you’ll have detailed knowledge and proven history of working within the tax industry, specifically within VAT. With the ability to drive change across processes, systems and people you’ll possess excellent communication skills able to deal with a cross section of the business at all levels. You’ll be an effective contributor to negotiations with tax authorities and other lobbying groups on complex issues to achieve a positive outcome for the group.

Through your enthusiastic, proactive approach you’ll have a strong desire to learn and be involved in a wide variety of tasks within the tax team and work on all taxes. Your experience might be within an accountancy firm, HMRC or an in-house team but it’s your ability to problem solve and manage multiple workloads that is what we’re looking for. Utilising your IT skills you’ll have strong experience of the MS Office suite, in particular Excel and PowerPoint, and preferably SAP. Modelling and forecasting an advantage, alongside solid experience of research with numerical and analytical skills. You’ll enjoy problem solving and thinking outside the box and have good communication skills, to deliver advice in a professional, easy to understand manner.
