Every day, 4 million people use Britain’s railways. At Network Rail, we own and operate the thousands of tracks, bridges, tunnels and stations that make their journeys possible. It’s a complicated task and it’s only getting more complex, with passenger numbers set to double in the next 25 years. So we’re investing around £39bn in maintenance and improvement.

Our Capacity Planning Team balance the need of train operators to move passengers and freight from A to B, and the need for our teams to spend time maintaining, renewing and enhancing the network. This is your chance to learn how to build the detailed plans that make it all possible.

It begins with up to 12 months of training. You don’t need any railway experience or planning knowledge. Perhaps you’re good at maths, science, history or technical subjects? If you’re a logical thinker with great attention to detail and the ability to prioritise tasks, you could soon find yourself on route to become a Timetable Planner. At the end of your 12 month contract, you should have the knowledge and experience to take on a permanent role.

As an Operational Planning Assistant you’ll help to deliver timetable plans. Your training will give you technical skills and experience of working in a range of locations.
