As a Graduate Statistician, you will be part of the market research team at Ofcom, working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams to help ensure our policies have a sound evidence base and deliver a real, long term benefit to consumers in communications markets. For example, you could: 

- Help to advise research managers and suppliers on appropriate sampling and statistical analysis across a range of research projects, particularly for tracking surveys and more complex research projects 
- Help advise on the practical application of statistical and modelling techniques with consumer data, particularly for projects involving economic concepts and analysis 
- Guide project team members on the appropriate use of stats 
- Provide ad-hoc statistical analysis as required and produce insightful analysis using a range of existing data sets e.g. media literacy, technology tracker, switching tracker 
- Project manage research projects, from commissioning through to publication 
- Commission and manage statistical analysis from suppliers 
- Deliver geographic mapping analysis for key projects 
- Exploring and carrying out analysis on very large datasets on mobile research and fixed broadband speeds 


A wide-ranging training programme would be available to you. This would include specialist statistical training as required e.g. SPSS, STATA and qualitative and quantitative market research methodologies and analysis techniques e.g. conjoint, key driver, segmentations. Ofcom would also sponsor membership of relevant professional organisations, such as, the Royal Statistical Society and the Market Research Society. 

Ofcom also offers a large internal training programme to support colleagues’ development. Sessions include written and oral communication skills and stakeholder engagement. 


During your two years on the programme, we offer six-month placements moving between projects, industry sectors and departments within Ofcom, to ensure that the knowledge and insight you are exposed to is as broad as possible. You will primarily be placed within the Market Research team working both with research and intelligence colleagues. Possible placements include Consumer Policy, Competition Group, and the Technology team or externally with one of our research agencies from our framework.
