BDS are currently recruiting for a Waste and Recycling Officer to work for are client who are a partnership within the local authority. Based in Crawley the post holder will play a key role in being a champion for waste reduction, re-use and recycling and take a lead in implementing new systems for recycling.

You will make sure that all the householders are getting the very best recycling services and household rubbish collection services, within available resources, and are very satisfied.

To ensure that the recycling services and household rubbish collection services are running properly according to the terms of the specification - as delivered by partnership working with the external contractor.

To be part of the team providing customer liaison, business liaison, education, advice and referrals for enforcement measures.

Duties include

To encourage greater participation by the public in recycling schemes.

To participate in the implementation of new schemes and getting involved with bin, box or bag deliveries and changing collection arrangements such as new location of rubbish.

To meet the contractor regularly, daily if necessary, and in particular formal weekly progress meetings and assisting with monthly valuation meetings.

To understand fully and insist on compliance by the contractor with the contract specifications, including assisting in monitoring health and safety procedures and inspections of the contractor.

To monitor agreed performance indicators to ensure continuous improvement and to recommend the application of penalties or additional payments as necessary.

To monitor any recycling bring sites so that the contractors duties of cleaning and emptying are discharged, and arranging repairs for damaged containers, ensuring that they have adequate labelling, information and directional signage.

The ideal candidate

• Up to date knowledge of the waste management industry particularly recycling
• Understanding of the key aspects of working with the public particularly customer care
• Legislation in Health & Safety at work
• Knowledge of equal opportunities and social inclusion
• Experience of supervising a contract, or supervising staff in a service industry

This is a 2-year contract that could be extended thereafter with a salary of up to £25,180.00 per annum.
