Job Title Estimator / Senior Estimator

Purpose of Job To prepare tenders.

We are excited to be recruiting an Estimator/Senior Estimator for a long standing and highly valued client of Orchard Recruitment. Based in North Yorkshire, our client have a near 100-year history and have benefitted from a continuity of management and ownership since the early 1990s, growing to in excess of 200-strong and £100m turnover.
As one of Yorkshire's leading building contractors, our client are involved in the building of commercial sites such as supermarkets, retail/shops, schools, universities, offices, car showrooms, banks, offices and more.
Continued growth has led to the requirement of an additional Estimator/Senior Estimator and due to the structure of the team, there is a huge amount of opportunity for progression and promotion.

Responsibilities (Seniority will determine scope of certain responsibilities and duties)


·Performance of the estimating, handover and feedback process for specific tender opportunities.


·Propose improvements to systems and procedures


·Help develop estimating organisation and people.


·Improvement of relationships with all internal and external customers.


·Help develop and instigate strategies and procedures that support the business and its Managers.

Performance of the estimating, handover and feedback processes for specific tender opportunities

·Review if required opportunities to confirm alignment with agreed criteria for pricing the project and confirm once checked/advise any misalignment.

·Prepare estimates in line with agreed tender strategy.

·Ensure that all rates used in arriving at an overall price are appropriate, and take responsibility for them.

·Agree tender strategy with tender team (eg internal and external staff requirements, VE, VM, establish tender preparation programme, enquiries/partners, deliverables and responsibilities for overall and sections of submission client meetings, SI/survey needs, measurement strategy, CDP ect.)

·Establish and agree enquiry scope and recipients

·Ensure Risk Management process is used to schedule risks, opportunities and proposed responses.

·Ensure at settlement, and order, that key business requirements are met.

·Price preliminaries in conjunction with Production Managers, Planners, Estimating Managers as appropriate.

·Arrange settlement meetings and present tenders for settlement.

·Prepare/collate tender submission documents as agreed tender strategy.

·Prepare files of tender information for ongoing use.

·Liaise/negotiate with customers post tender involving other team members as appropriate.

·Prepare documents for handover and ensure effective hand over to production.

·Track projects for compliance with tender allowances and assumptions as part of the feedback route into tenders using any agreed criteria.

Review and improvement of systems and procedures

·Generate proposals for improvement to IT and tender control systems

·Obtain and act on feedback from the estimating, handover and construction phases

·Benchmark performance against established KPI's and competitors.

Development of pre-construction organisation and people

·Gain by liaison a clear understanding of :

·Use the appraisal system to address personal skill needs and propose training.

·Ensure feedback on performance is gained and give positive feedback to others on good performance and areas for improvement.

·Establish positive relationships with tender customers wherever possible to promote and differentiate the business, form a basis for future development and maximise the chances for success.

·Establish relationships with production staff as part of the tender.

·Establish key relationships with "suppliers" - get to know the supply chain.

Help in developing and instigating policies and strategies that support the division and its Management.

·Keep managers regularly informed of relevant developments

·Provide positive input into senior management workshops, new initiatives etc
