Lead Architect

Fantastic opportunity for an experienced and professional Lead Architect to be responsible for the overall Solution Architecture encompassing applications, services, data and infrastructure, and the definition of how these components and services are integrated to support end to end business scenarios and processes.

The Lead Architect is a key decision maker in the selection of the technologies and products selected to implement the architecture. The Lead Architect subsequently owns the selected technology solutions including; development languages and frameworks, enterprise technology products and services, SaaS solutions, cloud infrastructure and platform services, web and mobile technologies, network, telephony and communications infrastructure. The Lead Architect ensures that technology solutions meet the business non functional requirements for performance, scalability, security, maintainability.

The Lead architect is responsible for leading the development of business and data solutions. The position is part of a team with a solutions ownership role.

The lead architect leads the development of viable business cases and value propositions, ensuring solutions meet both near term and long term business and IS objectives. The Lead Architect identifies opportunities for innovation implementation options (technology, supplier, process) and delivering actionable solution architecture designs, to enable the delivery within the IS roadmap and the BI Programme roadmap.

Company dimensions; circa 400 employees, turnover in the region of £1.2 billion.

Dimensions:
• Responsible for solution architecture selection, definition & technology governance for supporting circa 400 staff, £1.2bn revenue.

Key Responsibilities:
• Leads end-to-end solution architecture definition and design
• Ensures that technology solutions meet business objectives, scenarios and end to end process requirements
• Ensures that technology solutions meet non functional requirements for performance, scalability, security, maintainability
• Leads the team to design, estimate, implement, test, and support the product to deliver measurable performance improved solutions
• Designs and executes on software acceptance tests to ensure the solution meets the customer's business needs
• Works collaboratively with implementation team members
• Provides competence and skills to secure successful engagement with the customer from solutions and delivery perspective
• Considers alternate solutions and delivery models
• Regularly interacts with the business to assess satisfaction and identify follow-up education opportunities
• Oversees the application/implementation of new work processes
• Manages communication between the business and the project team during deployment
• Leads review and selection of BI Tools and Services for data integration, ETL, analysis, visualization, algorithm development, machine learning and AI to align with and the support the business objectives
• Ensure all Data and BI Solutions align with the overall architecture, as well compliance/regulatory and security requirements.
• Ensure all technology Solutions are commercially viable and deliver business value appropriate the cost. Ensure these solutions can be implemented and operated within capex and opex budget constraints.
• Ownership of the technical governance process for IS architecture and Data & BI solutions. Ensure peer review of solutions. Submit solutions for review and approval to the Technical Design Authority (TDA) and the Planets Design Authority (PDA) as appropriate.
• Engagement with business stakeholders, from Leadership Team to Operations Managers and Users/consumers of data and BI services across the business. Ensure that the architecture and solutions implemented support business strategy and objectives.
• Lead architecture contribution to business case definition, ensuring that the full range of solution/data/BI/Analytics technology options are assessed to deliver maximum business value at a quantified and appropriate cost
• Create innovative and actionable solution architecture designs that can be used by internal and external delivery teams to size, design, implement, test and deploy IS solutions
• Ensure appropriate controls are in place to ensure adherence to the solution architecture design and non-functional requirements during project delivery.
• Lead the assessment of changes to the solution architecture throughout IS and the BI and data programme

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required: Essential

• Deep understanding and experience in customer centric and retail architectures which include enterprise ERP solutions (SAP, Oracle etc) and digital channels
• Experience of delivering and integrating with tier 1 ERP systems
• Experience in implementing cloud infrastructure and platforms services – AWS, Azure, Google
• Strong experience in best practise IS architectures, frameworks, processes & notation including principles of SOA and micro services (TOGAF, Archimate)
• Understanding of data integration, ETL, data warehouse and BI technologies including – SSIS, SSAS, SQL Server, Matillion, Amazon Redshift and S3, Amazon EMR.
• Commercially minded, able to maximise value from existing and new technology & delivery partners

Desirable
• Solid understanding of utilities & retail sectors
• Deep technical experience across a range of technologies and platforms
• Experience of implementing digital platforms – web, mobile, CRM
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology or related subject
• Architecture certification (TOGAF)
• Experience of EA modelling tools
• Experience of working with in-house, near-shore and off-shore delivery teams
• Understanding of data visualization and analysis tools – Qlik, Looker, Tableau

Special Features:
• Occasional travel to regional offices (Ipswich, London, Selby)
• Working hours may need to be flexible to support delivery of various projects and deliverables.

Measures of Success:
• Business cases have understood technology implications, costs and opportunities and are documented according to company standards
• Solution options have evaluated alternative technology and delivery capabilities, are fully documented, have navigated the governance processes, a recommendation made and agreed.
• Mandatory architecture documentation is produced and kept up to date
• Architectural changes identified during project delivery are minimised and delivered within agreed cost and time tolerances
• IS solutions are transitioned into the Service Delivery function with no issues
