Background

The Museum is looking to recruit an experienced finance professional to join the senior management team.

The Museum is exceptional in generating 100% of its income. This is achieved through a combination of fundraising income and earned income. The income portfolio includes a successful shop and a popular café.

The Museum’ recent refurbishment has provided an improved interior with more displays, new- build facilities in the garden for education and café, and a new landscape. This Development as increased their income considerably.

As the Museum expands, we are looking for an experienced finance professional to join the senior management team as Head of Finance. The Head of Finance will provide a strategic overview, identify and react to risk, and introduce systems and procedures appropriate to an expanding organisation. He/she will line manage a full time Finance Manager.

Scope of Role

Main duties and responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting procedures and systems, ensuring all financial records and reporting systems are in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards and accounting principles
• Produce monthly financial reports and operating statements for presentation to an Executive Committee and quarterly financial reports for presentation to all Trustees
• Oversee the preparation of other key financial reports, including balance sheets, tax returns, and reports for government regulatory agencies
• Co-ordinate the annual income and expenditure forecast
• Instigate and monitor cash flow forecasts for the year ahead
• Appraise and update systems and processes to support efficient and effective working of the finance team
• Lead on risk/opportunity forecasting
• Line manage a full time Finance Manager
• Oversee the Museum’s insurance requirements

Person Specification

• Five years experience in a similar position, at a similar size or larger organisation
• Qualified accountant with detailed knowledge of VAT requirements, budget preparation experience and cash flow management
• Ability to articulate complex financial data to Trustees and staff
• Experience of working within the charity sector, and of restricted and unrestricted funding
• Experience of working with capital projects and design teams an advantage
• Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of line managing staff
• A flexible approach, and ability to work under pressure
• An understanding of the needs of a small, dynamic organisation
• Experience of funding awards and reporting an advantage
