The Organisation:

Our client is a rapidly growing technology business, focused on the commercialisation of a patented X-ray detector technology for medical and industrial imaging markets. Their technology works with existing X-ray detectors to generate additional materials information that can be used to improve the diagnostic value of medical imaging and deliver improved detection of defects and impurities in industrial applications.

The company is now looking to employ an experienced Experimental Officer / Lab Manager to help create and manage an effective laboratory service to support technical and commercial development activities in the company. The ideal candidate will be educated to at least HND-level or equivalent in an instrumentation, engineering or similar applied technical subject with several years’ experience in a senior technical role. Relevant experience with X-ray imaging equipment would be a significant advantage.

The Role:

The role requires an energetic individual capable of “getting things done” with minimal day-to-day management. The successful candidate will be expected to show high levels of commitment and responsibility in their job.
The Experimental Officer [/ Lab Manager] is responsible for creating and maintaining an effective and efficient laboratory service to support technical and commercial development activities in the company.

• Liaison with Applications and Scientific staff to ensure that the laboratory maintains the appropriate capability to meet the needs of the business
• Ensuring that lab equipment is functional, safe and is used in accordance with procedures in the Quality Management System (QMS), including: Developing and implementing improved safety procedures as required; Overseeing equipment checks and administrative procedures in line with the QMS; Troubleshooting problems with lab equipment and fixing them, or arranging for them to be fixed, as appropriate.
• Carrying out the role of Radiation Protection Supervisor, following appropriate training.
• Laboratory work planning, management and reporting
• Ensuring that laboratory space is kept clean, tidy and organised and presents a professional image to customers and other visitors at all times.
• Design and construction of experimental apparatus including: Mechanical support structures; Computer controlled stages and instrumentation; Electrical and electronic circuit design including interlocks and trigger circuits
• Experimental design, planning and execution to meet Applications and Scientific Staff requirements
• Management and mentoring of laboratory technicians
• Data analysis and reporting of results
• Clear communication with lab colleagues and scientific and engineering staff

Education:

• GCSE grade C or above in English, maths and at least one appropriate technical subject, or equivalent education or experience.
• HND equivalent or higher in Instrumentation, Engineering or similar technical subject, or equivalent experience.
• Practical experience in a senior technical role.
• Ability to manage/oversee lab staff and maintain good working relationships.
• Use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
