Or client, (part of Europe`s second largest contractor), have a superb opportunity for a Building Services Design Manager to manage the Building Services design department in their Manchester office. The role will involve managing the design team and ensure the quality of the designs meets with their client’s expectations. The post holder will also hold direct contact with the client and directly be involved with business critical projects.

The position sits within the Contracting business unit which is an EPC contractor and covers the following projects and sectors:-

-Building Services
-Data centres
-Energy from waste power plants
-Chemical process

To be suitable you must either be working at Senior Designer level or already working as a Design Manager from either an electrical or mechanical bias, but if you are from a mechanical background, you need have a good grounding on the electrical side. Job Description

1. To report to the Project Manager or Project Director where appointed on project work operationally.

2. To provide leadership to the internal or external design team

3. Provide interface with client and other key stakeholders as defined in the project structure.

4. To demonstrate a positive attitude to safety and CDM and to ensure the design team are active in this regard.

5. To ensure the design team are led and directed to achieve the overall project requirements are satisfied.

6. To ensure a Design Management Plan is produced for each project.

7. Ensure a project toolkit and project specific procedures are implemented in accordance with the company’s established procedural protocols.

8. To ensure an agreed scope of services for all internal / external design disciplines and/or design sub-contractors / suppliers is agreed in consultation with Legal / Commercial Department

9. Ensure adherence to the design brief/scope of service and develop (as required) a comprehensive scope of service reflecting each phase of the project and the requirements of the specific procurement route.

10. Programme and manage all design reviews and co-ordination meetings. To ensure a fully co-ordinated design strategy is in place and work closely with discipline lead designers to deliver coordinated design solutions. To ensure that the design is completed in a timely manner, taking due account of safety and buildability.

11. Ensure that Design Programmes are produced that integrate with the agreed Project Programme and that the programmes are regularly monitored for progress and updated as required.

12. Monitor design progress against programme, and report to the project team, in conjunction with the project planner.

13. Ensure project design deliverables are fully realised within overall programme time scales.

14. Ensure change control is managed with the bid / project teams.

15. Ensure designs are checked and meet project cost allowances. Monitor and manage fees against allowances.

16. Establish Information Deliverable Schedule – collate from the team and deliver on time with earned value to the project manager/director as appropriate.

17. Liaise with the commercial department to establish and confirm fee targets, and ensure design team are aware of and monitor progress against the target fees.

18. Ensure that design is developed in line with procurement and construction requirements and the cost plan budget allowances throughout the pre-construction and construction phases.

19. Establish design check lists to assist cost planning during negotiation / bid periods and assist in producing enquiry packages for major supply chain elements.

20. Ensure contractor design quotes are technically and commercially vetted for compliance with the tender documents and meet cost plan requirements.

21. Ensure O & M Manuals are provided prior to handover.

22. Ensure all Reviewable Design Data is sent to the Client’s checking engineers and all Design Comments from the same engineers are closed out in a timely manner.

23. Ensure that the design fully accords with the defined specifications as detailed within the work package control document or sub-contract documents as appropriate.

24. Ensure that Contractors Proposals are produced which meet the Client Brief, output specification and ensure technical clarifications and qualifications are produced and discussed with Legal/Commercial.

25. Ensure liaison of Design with the Commercial and Construction functions.

26. In conjunction with internal and external discipline heads, ensure that Resource Management is effectively and efficiently applied to all projects.

27. Ensure Progress Reports are completed on all matters relating to Design / Design Management.

28. To demonstrate the company’s values in day-to-day business – continuous improvement and best practice.
